Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego

4.5
Miramar National Cemetery is a federal military cemetery in the city of San Diego, California. It is located in the north west corner of the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on the grounds of old Camp Kearney (1917) and Camp Elliott (1942).
Miramar National Cemetery is considered an auxiliary of the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery and is administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The cemetery is located about 15mi north of Downtown San Diego on Nobel Drive between Miramar Road and Interstate 805.
On 30 January 2010, the Department of Veterans Affairs dedicated a new National Cemetery at the northwest corner of MCAS Miramar. The cemetery is an extension of Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery and when complete will accommodate the remains of approximately 235,000 veterans and spouses. Nearby Fort Rosecrans Cemetery closed to most casket burials in 1966, and prior to Miramar's opening, the only option for casket burials of San Diego region veterans was Riverside National Cemetery.
The cemetery design is sensitive to environmental considerations, preserving habitat for endangered California gnatcatchers and fairy shrimp.

  • We stopped in as we were driving through. All branches of the military represented. The tribute to POWs was well done. It’s worth a short visit. Poignant.  more »

  • My dear husband's ceremony was April 17, 2019. It was a beautiful tribute to him with the gun salute, the flag ceremony and taps. He is in the section under the bel tower and with his planes flying over, I am sure he feels right at home. The cemetery is immaculate and his headstone is lovely.
  • Will be going back june 27 2019 for my friend walt clemmens military burial🙏
  • Being this is the military National Cemetery it's very calming and very professionally Seven Stars to all of the staff that works at any military cemetery.
  • I would love to see a more personal service, no loved one speaking, no flowers. For waiting all this time to say goodbye to Michael Whittington WELL SERVICED.
  • I felt great pride as military aircraft flew over me, reassured this was where my loved one would be for all time. I am so grateful for this place of honor, to have been there for my father's memorial.
