Historic Site Tourist Spot
Casa Romantica was built in 1927 as the family home of Ole Hanson, who co-founded the city of San Clemente. The seven-bedroom, seven-bath house was designed by Carl Lindbom, who also designed La Casa Pacifica (the former Western White House).

Hanson's vision for San Clemente, which was one of the first master-planned cities in California, was that of a “Spanish Village by the Sea,” and Casa Romantica was his expression of the California dream. It set the tone for the majority of the other homes and businesses built within his development plan.

Over the years, the home passed through several owners, including the family of Hollywood entertainer and orchestra leader Fred Waring. At one time it even operated as a senior citizens’ home. Beginning in 1984, the Casa was leased to a private business for special events.

The San Clemente Redevelopment Agency purchased the property in 1989, and it was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1991. The City of San Clemente and its Redevelopment Agency elected to completely renovate the Casa for use as a cultural center.

Today, Casa Romantica provides programs for all ages in arts, music, history, horticulture and literature and is a premier Southern California cultural center. Its multifaceted Casa Captivating programming attracts local families as well as arts aficionados throughout Orange County, and the organization maintains a robust membership program with exclusive event discounts and select private functions.

The Casa is also a member of the American Horticultural Society, admission to which enables free admission to a network of 300 gardens in the United States, Canada, the Cayman Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Due to its stunning presence as an historic bluff-top estate that overlooks the Pacific ocean, Casa Romantica is a frequent photographic subject. The Casa is available to rent for weddings and private events.

  • Breathtaking views will blow you away. Can't Imagine 100 years ago when the owner found this place, how excited he must have been. Also learnt that the Richard Nixon house is just down the coastline south a few miles and the two residences used the same architect. Give you a feel of what the "trump tower" was like back in the early seventies;)
