San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, San Antonio

4.8
#3 of 55 in Trails in Texas
First established by Catholic missionaries on the frontier of the Spanish Southwest, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park highlights the history behind the colonization of this area. Take a step back into the 18th century and explore the four preserved missions located on the property: Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. Free, hour-long, and highly recommended guided ranger tours depart from the visitor center at Mission San Jose. While the missions are accessible by foot or bike via the riverwalk trail, they are quite spread out, so traveling by car is recommended. • Wonderful way to spend your time in San Antonio - outside the city. The missions are in far better shape than the last time I visited, 40 years ago. They are infinately more accessible, with a city bus line passing all but the very last one in the chain. The southernmost mission can be reached by a gentle one mile walk along the San Antonio River from the last bus stop. It is an excellent way to look back across almost 400 years of European history in North America. The park itself is a cooperative effort between San Antonio, the State of Texas, the Catholic Church, the National Park Service, and, through the designation as a World Heritage Site, the United Nations. It is a worthy effort.
  • Today I visited a very old mission church. It was incredible. It felt like walking into the past. Its Hidden inside the trails or Mission Trails. If you get a chance to go to all the Mission Trail churches; that would probably take you all day. If you are a history buff or just interested in historical missions, this would be fun for you. As for me, it was great. I recommend that you go and visit the missions. Take plenty of water, snacks and something for shade Plus some kind of chairs to sit.ok, good luck, 😁👍
  • Mission San Jose was awesome and the visitor center explaining the context behind the mission compounds was also a real treat. My curiosity was piqued when visiting the compound, and I might have liked a bit more in the way of displays in the visitor center. Still, we could have stayed longer to go on a ranger-guided tour, which always seem to fill in the gaps, and of course answer any questions. This is a great place and a must stop while in San Antonio. Unfortunately, the open road (and schedule) was calling us to continue on to Big Bend National Park later in the day. Still, part of a morning spent here was a blast.
  • Great place to go visit and witness the history of the missions of San Antonio. Don't forget to take pictures of your kids and family since the scenery is beautiful. Also recommend going to church on Sunday inside the mission it is a great experience, especially since they have a Mariachi band that plays all the music. Makes you feel like you are back in time during a simple time.
  • WOW WOW WOW!!! This place was absolutely stunning to me! I wasn't sure what exactly I was going into when I saw it on Google and decided to check it out, but my husband and I were pleasantly surprised! The beauty is breathtaking as is the History. The best part is how open it all is, you can walk in basically everywhere! Very nice!
