San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, San Antonio

4.8
#3 of 89 in Trails in Texas
First established by Catholic missionaries on the frontier of the Spanish Southwest, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park highlights the history behind the colonization of this area. Take a step back into the 18th century and explore the four preserved missions located on the property: Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. Free, hour-long, and highly recommended guided ranger tours depart from the visitor center at Mission San Jose. While the missions are accessible by foot or bike via the riverwalk trail, they are quite spread out, so traveling by car is recommended. • Loved all the Missions. If you are on a tight budget and time be sure to visit all the Missions. Check out history. It is the best. San Antonio is full of history and most of it is free. The River Walk is great. Take your camera and take pictures instead of buying souvenirs. Easier to get home also.
  • Worked here as a seasonal park ranger back in 1991. I always find myself returning to visit. The new, to me anyway, visitor center at San Jose is exceptional. All four missions have a unique charm and story to tell. I can easily lose myself just wandering around the grounds. The rangers are always friendly and helpful.
  • We cycled down to two of the missions from the Alamo in central San Antonio. The history around these is very interesting and with the river walk cycle path they are quite easy to get to. I would recommend for a cycling day out, but I feel that there isn't a vast amount to do at the missions after having a walk around, so you probably wouldn't need much time in each one.
  • We were here to raise money and awareness for ovarian cancer. We did a 5k walk through this area and it was beautiful. Lots of up and down around the area. The trail was smooth and clean, plenty of room for 3 or more people wide to walk on it. I just wished it had more trees, seems like a lot of them were cut down or they never planted more of them.
  • What an interesting park! I've lived in central Texas for three years and never knew about the history behind the San Antonio missions. The visitor center has great air conditioning, friendly staff, and a spacious movie theater with very comfy seats. The film was very educational and engaging. The park also offers ranger guided tours of the property. We enjoyed our tour and learned a lot. The ranger leading the tour was very upbeat, funny, and engaging! Definitely join a tour! Of course the architecture was beautiful and we had fun exploring all the buildings. We also had a blast doing our junior ranger booklets and getting our badges! A fun day trip for anyone in the Austin/San Antonio area.
