#2 of 32 in Sightseeing in San Antonio
Mission Historic Site
Founded in 1720, Mission San Jose is the largest of the missions in Texas and offers visitors a glimpse into the area's Spanish community life more than 250 years ago. This Catholic mission was rebuilt in limestone in 1768 and is dubbed Queen of the Missions because of its relative size compared to other nearby missions. A mission was not a church, but rather a Spanish community center with a religious focus. This particular mission underwent restoration in the 1930s and is most well-known for its detailed rose window. • I had memories of visiting a working mission in Arizona as a child, so this paled in comparison. But it was a very reverent, beautiful place. The inside of the church was gorgeous and we had the oppor...  more »
  • We really enjoyed visiting the mission. It was easy to get to using the local bus service. The historical video in the visitor centre is really well done and provides a good background on the mission....  more »

  • Stunningly beautiful grounds and amazing historical site. Well kept and impeccably maintained. Highly recommended.
  • Awesome site! It's huge and much better preserved than the Alamo. While the narrative is a bit biased, it's nowhere near as bad as the Alamo. If you only have time for one of the Missions, definitely hit up San Jose!
  • Love the beauty of this historic site and the church is phenomenal. I enjoy walking the grounds and taking in the sites.
  • Mission San Jose was my favorite to visit. I wasn't able to go into the church because a service was in session, but it looked really gorgeous inside just from peeking in the open doors. The grounds are really lovely and fun to explore.
  • Finally a church that actually looks like and feels like a church. It was great to celebrate easter here.
