Joseph Smith Memorial Building, Salt Lake City

#1 of 15 in Childrens Museums in Utah
Originally the Hotel Utah, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building was later named in honor of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. It is located on the corner of Main Street and South Temple in Salt Lake City. It is now a social center with three restaurants: The Roof Restaurant, The Garden Restaurant and The Nauvoo Cafe. It is also a venue for events complete with 13 banquet rooms, catering services, event coordinators and a full-service floral department - Flowers Squared. Several levels of the building also serve as administrative offices for LDS Church departments such as FamilySearch. On January 3, 1978, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Hotel Utah.HistoryThe corner of Main Street and South Temple has long been important in Utah history. Prior to construction of the Hotel Utah in 1909-11, the general tithing office of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), a bishop's storehouse, and the Deseret News printing plant all were located on the site.Work on the Second Renaissance Revival style hotel, designed by the Los Angeles architectural firm of Parkinson and Bergstrom, began in June 1909. Two years later, on June 9, 1911, the Hotel Utah opened for business. While the LDS Church was the primary stockholder, many Mormon and non-Mormon community and business leaders also purchased stock in the effort to provide the city with a first-class hotel.

  • This place was an old hotel. It has a nice architecture. Look to the beehive at its top. It has nice restaurants at its top in terms of views and service. But garden restaurant doesn't have good food, the other one is buffet. Nice but not my first preference for dinner. It has a video on Joseph Smith but it only shows as if he has one wife also doesn't show why he was imprisoned. Family history place doesn't contain anything for a Turkish person like me.
  • If you enter the parking garage from South Temple Street you can get validated parking from the restaurants in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and not have to pay for parking if it's less than 3 hours. There's two restaurants at the top of the building. One of them is called the roof and the other was called the garden. The roof is elegant fine-dining buffet style. It cost roughly about a hundred bucks with a good tip for two people. Absolutely worth it if you want to impress your date.
  • Gorgeous building. There is also a feeling of kindness, no hostility. It's very, very well maintained. The architecture is awesome. There was live piano music in the lobby when I was there, and a very knowledgeable guide offered to answer any questions.
  • Ate at the Roof Restaurant. Good food, not fabulous. I think we pay the premium for the atmosphere more than anything. Buffets are hard to do. Most things were good, but many if the meats were overdone. Beautiful views of the Temple grounds at Christmas.
  • Utah's finest. Just plain classy. Old-world style ornate. Drop by during Christmas season for free hot chocolate and carolers at 530pm. Beautiful at Christmas with large Christmas tree and frequent art exhibits. Great photo op location. Yummy cafe famous for their homemade turkey pot pie.
