#1 of 13 in Childrens Museums in Utah
Originally the Hotel Utah, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building was later named in honor of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. It is located on the corner of Main Street and South Temple in Salt Lake City. It is now a social center with three restaurants: The Roof Restaurant, The Garden Restaurant and The Nauvoo Cafe. It is also a venue for events complete with 13 banquet rooms, catering services, event coordinators and a full-service floral department - Flowers Squared. Several levels of the building also serve as administrative offices for LDS Church departments such as FamilySearch. On January 3, 1978, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Hotel Utah.HistoryThe corner of Main Street and South Temple has long been important in Utah history. Prior to construction of the Hotel Utah in 1909-11, the general tithing office of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), a bishop's storehouse, and the Deseret News printing plant all were located on the site.

  • Utah's finest. Just plain classy. Old-world style ornate. Drop by during Christmas season for free hot chocolate and carolers at 530pm. Beautiful at Christmas with large Christmas tree and frequent art exhibits. Great photo op location. Yummy cafe famous for their homemade turkey pot pie.
  • I had my wedding reception here and used the in-house floral. The entire experience from beginning to end was deeply disappointing. On the day of the wedding my flowers never showed up to the temple as previously arranged. My bridesmaid had to hunt them down - missing most of the pictures. The bouquet was almost exactly opposite of what I wanted and what was discussed. Inside the room the decor was different from what we ordered. There were no lights where we arranged for lights to be. In lieu of a floral arrangement on the food table there was a ridiculous plastic/metal lit up tree "thing". No one had set up the pictures or sign in book as arranged so as my guests we're coming in I was setting things up. In the middle of the reception my brother-in-law had to go search for a microphone which was supposed to be in the room. For how much we paid we were so disappointed. I reached out after the fact to discuss the issues and was never responded to. They sent me a survey in the mail which I returned to them with these complaints and still heard nothing. If you have another venue option I'd suggest using someone else.
  • Great location, really good price, awesome service for our wedding reception, and some really tasty food! We had prime rib and chicken Wellington, and people were raving about them! The servers were great and the view of the Salt Lake City temple out the window was beautiful, as was the venue itself.
  • I have worked in the Joseph Smith Memorial Bldg. For the past 22 years I have worked in this beautiful bldg. for 22 years. What makes this bldg. So amazing is it's history. This bldg. Was at one time The Hotel Utah, one of the most beautiful hotel's in the western United States. Presidents and legendary actors and musicians stayed here.
  • This building is so beautiful and amazing! I'm glad the L.D.S. church saved it. The views are great both day and night from the 10th floor, it's a must if you are checking out the sights of downtown Salt Lake City. The restaurants are very good as well. I have been to some amazing wetting receptions there thought the years it's a great place for those type of gatherings.
