4.6
#2 of 6 in Things to do in Salisbury
Nestled next to Schumaker Pond in Salisbury, surrounded by wildlife in the heart of the Atlantic Flyway. The Ward Museum was named in honor of Steven and Lemuel Ward, whose vision and artistry in carving decoys pioneered the transition in the role of the decoy from a working tool to an expressive wildfowl sculpture.

The Ward Museum is a cherished part of its local community on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and far beyond. Maintaining a national and international reputation for excellence, the Museum has dues-paying members in all 50 states and 10 countries. The reach of this institution reflects the wide appeal and interest in an art form that reveals the interconnections of art, nature and heritage.

  • Do you like ducks? Do you like duck art? Do you want to see thousands of them? Are you old, rich, and boring? Are you old, rich, boring and like ducks or duck hunting? You'll love this museum. It's a really niche museum, that isn't geographically specific. It's *exactly* what you are looking for. It doesn't matter the subject, it's a great museum.
  • A very interesting experience, even if you're not an enthusiast. Fate brought my husband and me here while on vacation. We saw the signs and vaguely remembered reading about the place online so we went - the first room was filled with very old basic looking ducks, which sortve makes you think "oh god what have I gotten myself into?" I mean, neat but not 'price of admission' neat... But fear not traveler, it gets progressively more interesting! The last room is nothing short of mind blowing. The carvings are so insanely intricate it's hard to believe they aren't real. I mean, if the whole museum was only that last room, it'd still be worth the price of admission. Word to the wise for the uninitiated... if you're going here on a lark it's actually quite popular - this place is like the world epicenter and leading authority on all things wooden duck, and so it's likely you will find yourself alongside other people who are taking this very seriously. Overall it's super cool and highly recommended.
  • A great collection of water fowl art and an important part of Eastern Shore culture. Beautiful setting also.
  • Interesting visit but I wish the walking paths around the building were better maintained
  • Extraordinary collection of waterfowl art and a wonderful gift shop with lovely and quirky items. The building is quite chilly, however, so bring along a sweater or hoodie.
