Old Burying Point Cemetery, Salem

4.4
#2 of 12 in Historic Sites in Salem
Established in 1637, Old Burying Point Cemetery is the second oldest known cemetery in the United States, featuring headstones so old that some are crumbling. Look for the burial spot of John Hathorne--apart from being the great-great grandfather of the famous writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, he was also the judge during the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Although no one knows where the victims of the trial were buried, a memorial has been erected at this cemetery. Numerous other intriguing people rest here as well, illustrating Salem's eerie and colorful past. • Im a history buff so I found this to be fascinating. There are people buried here that were on the Mayflower- too cool! It's a lot smaller than I would have thought, but full of amazing little pieces ...  more »

  • The coolest creepy place we went. Really old haunted feeling, especially in the evening.
  • It's a place to visit if you love historical places and visiting the graves of the many people listed on the map plaque located upon entrance of the cemetery, but then there are all the other people buried who are just as interesting because many died before 1776 (before the Declaration of Independence came to be). The map is a little tricky. There were only 3 people that we could find. They need a better map or someone needs to create a paper map leading us to the right grave and sell it in the tourist shops. Why hasn't anyone thought of this? It was a hot day. If it hadn't been a hot day I would have stayed there all day. More photos and reviews on YELP
  • Very interesting. Has a map of notable graves as you walk in from the street access. Volunteers we're there to manage large groups and before Halloween.
  • Sad that people just come and stomp everywhere. They really need to mark off the pass. It looks like the cemetery is being absolutely destroyed.
  • This place and the Memorial are next to each other. It was interesting to see the old stones dating back hundreds of years.
