Old Burying Point Cemetery, Salem

(1,000+ reviews on the web)
Cemetery
Established in 1637, Old Burying Point Cemetery is the second oldest known cemetery in the United States, featuring headstones so old that some are crumbling. Look for the burial spot of John Hathorne--apart from being the great-great grandfather of the famous writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, he was also the judge during the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Although no one knows where the victims of the trial were buried, a memorial has been erected at this cemetery. Numerous other intriguing people rest here as well, illustrating Salem's eerie and colorful past. • Worth a visit while you're in town. Closed at night so make sure you stop by during daylight hours. The tombstones, though hard to read, date back 250+ years (the ones I could decipher) and there's a ...  more »

  • One of the coolest old cemeteries we've ever visited. On a quest to find the oldest tombstones, we were not disappointed. I did not find it 'creepy' as some folks have said, it was a bit sad but historically satisfying. The oldest tombstone we found was 1680! On one end of the small cemetery, there is a homage to the many innocent people who were murdered during the 9 month witch month. Keep an eye out on the incredible iconography that is on every tombstone. It can be accessed by a wheelchair but with difficulty and there is nowhere to sit and rest. Very interesting place to visit.
  • Small old cemetery with a couple note worthy names and a couple plaques just outside about the "witches" who were executed. Nice to walk around for a little while.
  • Simple and nice. But not much historic information about buried people there.
  • The sadness is tangible here.
  • Old Cemetery, cool to visit !
