#2 of 6 in Parks in Salem
Minto-Brown Island Park is the largest park in Salem, Oregon, United States.HistoryIn 1857, Isaac Brown established his home on what came to be known as Brown’s Island, near the west bank of the Willamette River. There Brown raised livestock, farm produce, and tobacco. In 1867, John Minto purchased and cleared land on an island near the east bank, turning it into productive farmland. That island would later come to be named Minto Island. Due to flooding the land those two men settled are no longer true islands. The area is still subject to periodic flooding, which prevents it from being developed. Instead, restoration projects have added thousands of trees and converted many agricultural acres to native plantings. This prevents soil erosion, improves wildlife habitat, and promotes water quality.FeaturesThe park has a playground, a reservable shelter, walking, jogging and bike trails, picnic areas, a dog park, several fishing spots, and a paddle boat area.Future developmentin 2013, a purchase of of Boise Cascade property was added to the existing 898acre park for a total of. The property will be the landing point for the Peter Courtney Pedestrian Bridge from Riverfront Park, scheduled for completion in 2016. As of 2015, additional paved trails are being planned and a new master plan is being developed.

  • Really large park with lots of paved trails and unpaved trails for walking and biking. There is a large off-leash area for dogs that is not fenced. The rest of the park dogs have to be on the leash. I never saw a playground for kids. There is a new pedestrian bridge that now connects the park to Downtown Salem.
  • Great park to walk, ride bikes, run, skate, take the dog, fish, canoe, kayak. Rainy seasons some sections have flooded paths but the middle parts are usually clear. There are usually signs near the affected areas when this happens. You can get lots of distance covered. I walked 6 miles the other day and only took out skirt paths.
  • This is a wonderful park!! I was passing through town and so glad I came across this place. Spacious and clean. Nice paved and unpaved trails. The trails/ walking paths are well marked. My dogs enjoyed themselves and it's great to be at a park that had plenty of trash cans to rid myself of their poop bags. Lol!
  • Great ,quiet place to walk and often see Herons and Snowy Egrets. Many Geese and Ducks also. Well maintained paved and gravel pathways winding through heavily wooded acres and along the riverside. Now , with the pedestrian bridge, one can walk from downtown through all of Minto Brown Park. Be warned , many pathways flood throughout the winter and become impassable.
  • Great, large dog park and miles of trails (leashes required on trails). Connect to riverfront and wallace marine park for a long walk or a great run.
