#2 of 7 in Wineries in Salem
Bethel Heights Vineyard is an Oregon winery in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA of the Willamette Valley. Founded in 1977 by twin brothers Ted and Terry Casteel, their wives Pat Dudley and Marilyn Webb and Pat's sister Barbara Dudley, the vineyard was one of the earliest plantings in the Eola-Amity Hills region. While initially only a vineyard, a winery was built with the first estate wines produced in 1984. While specializing in Pinot noir, offering several individual block and vineyard designated bottlings, Bethel Heights also produces wines made from Chardonnay, Pinot gris, Pinot blanc, Riesling, Gr├╝ner Veltliner, and Gew├╝rztraminer.Today, the winery remains family owned between the Casteel-Dudley-Webb families with 11 co-owners. The winery has earned a reputation in the region as a pioneer in "sensible and sustainable" viticulture with Ted Casteel being one of the co-founders of the Low Input Viticulture and Enology (LIVE) certification program in the state of Oregon. In 1997, Bethel Heights was one of the first vineyards in Oregon to be certified Salmon-Safe and they are a member of the Oregon Certified Sustainable Wine (OCSW). In 2007, they were among the first Oregon wineries to join the Oregon Global Warming Commission and pledged to go carbon neutral by 2010.

  • Stunningly beautiful view of wine country from this high up winery. Classy tasting room, fabulously decorated, and always warm and welcoming. Fantastic wines. You will be so happy you made the trip to this winery.
  • Great view! Nice people!
  • Well developed wines. Recommended.
  • A couple of wines (at > $55 per bottle) were definitely nice and we did leave with a couple bottles to cover the tasting. The wine server we got was nice, but the other two were a bit standoffish, at least at first. Really glad we got the more down to earth server, though one of the other servers did bring our toys for a toddler in our group. I get the snooty/stuck-up winery if all the wines are amazing -- some of my favorite Napa wineries have that vibe. But if your wine is average until the $50 price point you shouldn't be super aloof about that. There is no reason, in a place like Willamette Valley, that you can't make a tasty $20 bottle of Chardonnay. I can pick up decent wines, even Pinots, at $20 in Whole Foods and other places. L Bethel had a really good Chardonnay at $75. That is out of my price range, especially when I can get a comparable Chardonnay at 1/2 the price. Their really good pinots started at $56 and again I've had better for less money in Willamette Valley. On the other hand, beautiful property, great views and goats you can pet. So worth the visit if you don't mind overpaying for your wine.
  • Excellent wine, excellent Tasting Room, beautiful views, very good experience. Excellent example of Pinot Noir in this area. Highly recommended.
