St. Simons Lighthouse Museum, Saint Simons Island

Glimpse into the life of a lighthouse keeper at St. Simons Lighthouse Museum. The original lighthouse, an octagonal structure built in 1810, was destroyed in 1862 by retreating Confederate soldiers. The current lighthouse was completed in 1872. Climb the 129 steps up 32 m (104 ft) of this still-functioning lighthouse to take in the views of the sea and township below. As you come down the stairs, listen for the ghost of an assistant keeper, slain by the head keeper in 1880. The lighthouse keeper's dwelling at the base of the lighthouse holds exhibits about the history of the lighthouse and life for the keepers. Admission also allows you a tour of the maritime center at the Coast Guard station nearby. The lighthouse tower closes during bad weather. • Very nice. One of the best kept lighthouses on the east coast. Can go all the way to the top. The view is amazing in every direction. The volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly and the gift shop has a lot of cools stuff. Great place to drop in for an hour and then walk over to the main drag and grab a bite to eat. We had a blast!
  • The cost is a bit high. The museum staff are knowledgeable, the museum is underwhelming..... but the view from the top is exceptional. I would recommend this at least once. The gift shop is also pretty good.
  • Great place to visit for the family. There is a nearby park with lots of things to do, does not cost a fortune. There is also nearby shopping area for you to browse the local shops. I really like and appreciate the local feel and friendliness of the local people here. This place gives the area a sense of history too.
  • Well kept lighthouse with a nice little museum. It's a pretty easy climb, too, with handrails on the left side. Not to mention the fact that the view from the top is incredible! Definitely worth the detour off I-95. The museum and tour were $12. I got there at 4:29pm and tours completely stop at 4:30pm, so I would arrive by 4pm at the latest so you have a few minutes to browse the house.
  • Fun time watching the pilot boat ease its way out in moderately heavy fog. Among the best restrooms we've ever encountered in our travels.
