Specialty Museum Museum
Glimpse into the life of a lighthouse keeper at St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum. The original lighthouse, an octagonal structure built in 1810, was destroyed in 1862 by retreating Confederate soldiers. The current lighthouse was completed in 1872. Climb the 129 steps up 32 m (104 ft) of this still-functioning lighthouse to take in the views of the sea and township below. As you come down the stairs, listen for the ghost of an assistant keeper, slain by the head keeper in 1880. The lighthouse keeper's dwelling at the base of the lighthouse holds exhibits about the history of the lighthouse and life for the keepers. Admission also allows you a tour of the maritime center at the Coast Guard station nearby. The lighthouse tower closes during bad weather. • My friends convinced me to give the lighthouse a go - 129 steps up to the best view of St Simons Island. It was gorgeous! For $12, you get to watch a 15 minute movie telling the history of the island ...  more »
  • We love lighthouses and on a recent visit to St. Simons we took time to visit the gift shop, the lighthouse and the top. Well worth the couple of dollars. There's a short 8 or 10 minutes film, then yo...  more »

  • This lighthouse is absolutely gorgeous. We took the tour that is offered and the views are spectacular. Its not pricey either to take the tour, something nice to do with friends and family if you have some spare time in between other adventures on st. Simons island.
  • My husband and I were on the island for business and I knew he had never been anywhere like this. We took the tour of the house, shop, and light house. It was a great time. Staff was kind and knowledgeable.
  • We were so disappointed. We are from Missouri and arrived 5 minutes to late. Mapquest said it closed at five o'clock. We arrived at 4:35 and was told we were to late, last climb tickets are sold at 4:30. Told them this was our only chance to see it. We won't be able to get back here. She Didn't care, she well that's to bad. Not very friendly. Looked great from the outside. Would have loved to see the view from the top. ☹
  • This is a must see. Such a beautiful view and don't forget a camera! It's an easy climb even for people who are scared of heights. There are several landings where you can stop to catch your breath or let someone pass by.
  • "Good" overall; history and sights are just "good" and expected for the hefty cost to get in and money put into the sight over the years. Disappointed in that when I asked one of the two attendants at the counter if they offered a military discount, she snobbishly told me, "Yes, but only to active duty (AD) military." I explained to her that after having served 21 honorable years (Retired) that I was a little offended; as per their rules, a person on AD with three months of service for example was given a discount while millions of retirees and service / war connected disable vets for example are not. I told her I think they are missing the point; retirees and the group of folks I mentioned are forever military until we die (why I have a military ID that expires with me). She just chuckled and ignored me while ringing up the regular cost, while the other attendant said, yes, I understand. I just chocked it up to sincere ignorance, and shook my head. The mere existence of the lighthouse and its purpose is a representation of those who served, although in the distant past, in the past nonetheless.
