St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum, Saint Simons Island
(4.6/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Glimpse into the life of a lighthouse keeper at St. Simons Island Lighthouse Museum. The original lighthouse, an octagonal structure built in 1810, was destroyed in 1862 by retreating Confederate soldiers. The current lighthouse was completed in 1872. Climb the 129 steps up 32 m (104 ft) of this still-functioning lighthouse to take in the views of the sea and township below. As you come down the stairs, listen for the ghost of an assistant keeper, slain by the head keeper in 1880. The lighthouse keeper's dwelling at the base of the lighthouse holds exhibits about the history of the lighthouse and life for the keepers. Admission also allows you a tour of the maritime center at the Coast Guard station nearby. The lighthouse tower closes during bad weather. • You purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then walk in to the museum of the lighthouse. You can walk around the top on the outside of the lighthouse. Very of ocean, St. Simons and Jekyll Island.

  • Very interesting bit of history. Small collection is packed with lots of information. The lighthouse is well-maintained and offers a fabulous view of a beautiful area.
  • I love the lighthouse! Climb gets harder as I get older. One of the great charms of the Island!
  • Excellent views. Worth the trip.
  • Went here on a weekend trip with my wife and kid. Very cool lighthouse, awesome view if you go to the top.
  • Easy climb, with landings along the way, great for all ages. View is magnificent.
