Christ Church Episcopal, Saint Simons Island

(4.9/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
A classic white color, relatively small size, and setting among shady oak trees belie the historical and cultural significance of Christ Church Episcopal. The house of worship has stood here since 1820, lasting through a conversion into a horse stable by Union troops during the Civil War, followed by restoration in 1884. Inside, see the plaques on the pews commemorating visits by U.S. presidents, and view the various stained-glass windows--including the 18th-century one in the back imported from Germany. Outside, visit the cemetery where native St. Simons islanders, including author Eugenia Price, were laid to rest. The church's services are open to visitors, so you can worship here if you'd like. • Beautiful. 2nd oldest church in the US. Original settlers of SSI buried here. If you come to SSI you have yo come here
  • The adjoining cemetery was very interesting. There are some really old graves and a lot of veterans were buried here. There were servicemen from the Revolutionary, Civil, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Lots of history. We met the pastor and he was very kind and gave us a mini history lesson. We were specifically looking for the grave site of Pastor Dodge and his wives as my wife had read a book about them. The pastor pointed out the grave sites and provided even more information.
  • There are only a few places on this earth that are as lovely and as peaceful as this little church and it's garden of saints.
  • Visited the graveyard and the play ground only. The graveyard is beautiful with very large trees and the is alot of history here.
  • Its haunted and the grave yard is surrounded by the church the original Christ church burned down they also put a gate up to keep kids out if you go at night you can see a candle flowting above her grave stone
