  • Despite the occasional jet roaring overhead, Ft. Smelling is the perfect place for a quick trip to the woods. Yesterday we saw deer, eagles, turkeys, and more all while fishing in the lake and from the banks of the Minnesota River.
  • Fort Snelling State Park is one of our favorite parks in the Twin Cities. Come and see where the mighty Mississippi meets the Minnesota River. Hike around Pike Island or other trails. The deer are friendly. We cross-country skied through a herd of deer. Some didn't get up, they just watched us and I spoke to them. One day I approached a doe with three fawns. The doe wasn't afraid, she would have eaten out of my hand, if I had food for her. The wild turkey are friendly too. I had two young hens following me one day, I wasn't sure what they were up to, so I didn't turn my back to them. I didn't want to lead them away from their flock so I shooed them back to their family. I learned to snowshoe and cross-country ski on these trails. I can't wait to go back!
  • Before you go make sure to see if there is flooding. Much of the lower part of the park is in the flood zone of the river and trails may be inundated. Great walks, though.
  • A surprising variety of wildlife year round, very beautiful in the summer but also very buggy!
  • Great hiking place. I luckily went on an open house day, so didn't need a permit. The open house day is usually in the 1st or 2nd weenkend of June. They have cool hiking trails. You can check out the Historic Fort Snelling, an old infantry unit. People will be dressed up as in the olden ages and do their everyday chores. Uploaded some pictures of the fort.
