#1 of 6 in Historic Sites in Saint Paul
Religious Site Tourist Spot
With its Neoclassical architecture and copper and gold-leaf dome, Cathedral of Saint Paul is one the largest and most recognizable religious buildings in the United States. The cathedral features 24 stained-glass windows. On the inside, the life of Saint Paul is honored with a large, bronze baldachin. You can also see the statues of four evangelists. The cathedral celebrates migrations of people to Minnesota with its five chapels dedicated to the patron saints of the Irish, the Italians, the Germans, the Slavs, and the French-Canadians. Another chapel is dedicated to Christian missionaries. You can take a guided tour or opt for a self-guided tour (brochures are available inside the cathedral for a small donation). Where to stay in Saint Paul

Places to stay in St. Paul sit concentrated in the downtown area. The Lowertown Historic District, which includes some of the city's oldest buildings, makes a particularly attractive option. Hotels, guesthouses, and bed and breakfasts here can put you just steps from the Mississippi River, while the greater downtown area also offers apartment rentals and hostels. Staying downtown also puts you within walking distance of most of the city's prime attractions. Additionally, you'll find a handful of national-chain hotels on the east side of town near Interstate 494 / 694.

  • This was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in my life. Absolutely gorgeous. I felt so moved by its grandeur and beauty. My sons were just as moved as I was. It is truly beyond words.  more »
  • One of our family members wanted to go see the cathedral and we went along just to see why they wanted to go -- it was well worth seeing. It's a huge cathedral and the tour is well done and intriguing...  more »
  • The Cathedral of St. Paul is both historic and inspiring. The architecture, the sense of serenity as you walk the aisles. Stained glass, organ, choir, all enjoyable.  more »

  • I challenge you all to "listen" and take notes during the readings (1st, 2nd, and Gospel) and sermon message by the Priest. When my family and I drive home after "mass", I challenged everyone this question-"What did you get off the readings or message"? We then try to meditate/memorize key Bible verses and try to remember it when it comes applicable in life. I take pics of the readings or hymns, so I can remember it throughout the week for that "encouragement". God bless this city of St. Paul!
  • Very cool cathedral to visit. We just drove to it and decided to take a look. There is free parking in the lot. The place is such an amazing site to see from the great structure outside to all the detail in side. There are guided tours on certain times. We just walked up and entered and looked around ourselves. Walked around inside, sat down and took a look at everything and then downstairs is some history of the building. It's something free to do so can't complain.
  • Beutifeul house of worship. Great place to meditate I was confirmed there and baptized but I don't know if that was ever valid as I was baptized Lutheran and Prebsteryian after my baptism of birth.
  • One of the greatest churches of the United States. The art and architecture here is incredible.
  • So beautiful. Many of the praises are in Latin, it's culturally beautiful. Great service. It's not too noisy or echoey or intimidatingly beautiful but quite peaceful and a good place to worship.
