Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis
(4.7/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web)
Featuring a collection of more than 30,000 works of art, Saint Louis Art Museum counts among one of the country's major art institutions, attracting over half a million visitors each year. Erected for the 1904 World's Fair, the three-story building went through a massive restoration project in 2009 in which 21 new galleries were added, some for each of its permanent collection and temporary exhibits. The museum's star attraction is its modern art collection, including works by European masters Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Gauguin. Don't miss the gallery dedicated to 20th century German paintings that features the world's biggest collection of works by Max Beckmann, plus pieces by Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, and Martin Kippenberger. • I have travelled all over the world and been to so many fine arts museums and St. Louis's museum is right up there with the great ones. I was especially impressed with their African Arts collection. It might be smaller than some but the quality and the uniqueness of the collection is very impressive. Don't miss this museum. It's worth staying an extra day here. (By the way, I grew up in New York City and I live in Florida now so I consider myself unbiased.
  • Always free! However don't let the price full you. They are always having new collections featured. However, too many parents don't control their kids and young adults not respecting the quiet signs.
  • I love the art museum. They have a beautiful collection of traditional arts as well as a modern art wing. There are free kids activities every Sunday.
  • Excellent place to go on your own or with family members. One can call ahead of time and ask for a personal tour in various languages. Guides are well trained volunteers.
  • I love going to the art museum. The collection is vast am beautiful. Form the Monet and Picasso's to the extensive medieval collection it is amazing. Their rotating shows are always worth the entry fee as well. My biggest complaint is something they have little control over and that is that other patrons can be loud in the echo filled rooms making it hard for someone wanting to delve into the art to focus while children scream in the room.
