Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis

4.8
Featuring a collection of more than 30,000 works of art, Saint Louis Art Museum counts among one of the country's major art institutions, attracting over half a million visitors each year. Erected for the 1904 World's Fair, the three-story building went through a massive restoration project in 2009 in which 21 new galleries were added, some for each of its permanent collection and temporary exhibits. The museum's star attraction is its modern art collection, including works by European masters Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Gauguin. Don't miss the gallery dedicated to 20th century German paintings that features the world's biggest collection of works by Max Beckmann, plus pieces by Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, and Martin Kippenberger. • The entrance to the Museum is free and it contains a wealth of paintings and other works, including picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, degas, Lichtenstein, Warhol... The tables are present and there is an adjacent modern building which contains the works of contemporary art well highlighted. In short, well worth the trip.

  • One of St. Louis' premiere attractions, the museum showcases a huge collection of representative pieces spanning many periods, genre, and geographic locations. It is free to everyone, certainly a rarity in today's world, because citizens elect to shoulder costs so that everyone has the ability to enrich their mind and soul through art. Traveling exhibits are usually quite good. Photos are of the "Sunken Cities" exhibit.
  • One of the best kept secrets of the Forest Park area of St Louis. The Art Museum is free with the exception of traveling exhibits as is the parking unless you park "inside" the parking garage. There are representative works of all the famous and well known artists to include Picasso's "Water Lilies". Several pieces by Rembrandt and Monet as well. There are entire collections going back to the pre-dynastic period of Egypt, an armory from the middle ages up to the late Renaissance, and art from around the world. Chinese, Japanese, Pacific islands, Africa, Asia, Australia, Native America, Europe, and more. The lighting and display of each theme and period is controlled to emphasize the artwork. It's quiet and rarely busy. There is both a Cafe and a restaurant inside the museum. Some rooms are close while others are grand. Seating is available everywhere particularly in the larger galleries. I could visit this museum every other day for four hours at a stretch. Time tends to stand still here. I recommend checking your time or you may be here longer than you expected.
  • One of the finest museums of art I have been to in the Midwest. They have a magnificent selection of ceramics and sculpture as well as paintings and drawings from many different periods. In addition they have a lovely gift shop and Cafe. One of the wonderful thing about the museums in St Louis area is that they are part of the parks and rec educational Initiative Program so the admission is free! And parking is free! However parking can be difficult it's best if you have someone with disabilities or mobility issues to drop them off at the main entrance and then go find a parking spot. Once inside they do have wheelchairs available if need be and elevators as well.
  • They have nice exhibitions and art work. We viewed the Sunken Cities today. Very interesting. One employee there seems to take her job a little too seriously but other than her crankiness, it was a nice visit.
  • Free? Art Museum? Sounded great and is! The collection they have is massive. Only went once and made it only halfway through. Definitely need to go back and checkout the rest of the exhibits! And staff is friendly!
