Featuring a collection of more than 30,000 works of art, Saint Louis Art Museum counts among one of the country's major art institutions, attracting over half a million visitors each year. Erected for the 1904 World's Fair, the three-story building went through a massive restoration project in 2009 in which 21 new galleries were added, some for each of its permanent collection and temporary exhibits. The museum's star attraction is its modern art collection, including works by European masters Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Gauguin. Don't miss the gallery dedicated to 20th century German paintings that features the world's biggest collection of works by Max Beckmann, plus pieces by Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, and Martin Kippenberger. My wife was an art major in college and she liked it more than I did. She was a little disappointed in the amount of Impressionist paintings but did like what was there. It is free which is nice.
The property is perfect for events, we attended a wedding. It's large, clean and very impressive. Cocktails on the patio outside, dinner in the main hall and dancing in a side chamber were all accommo... read more »
I love going to the art museum. The collection is vast am beautiful. Form the Monet and Picasso's to the extensive medieval collection it is amazing. Their rotating shows are always worth the entry fee as well. My biggest complaint is something they have little control over and that is that other patrons can be loud in the echo filled rooms making it hard for someone wanting to delve into the art to focus while children scream in the room.
My girlfriend and I went here basically because we were short on time and wanted to o do something close to home. It was kind of cool checking it out again. The mummies still freak me out though!
I have visited the Art Museum 2 times last week because the collection is very rich. The collection is great and the museum shows best of the art you can imagine. Most impressive for me were the sculptures from Rodin, Degas, Maillol, Lehmbruck and so on. Even African bronzes from Benin were shown. It was a pleasure for me and my wife to see all this exposed in such a generous manner. The restaurant was great. I can recommend it.
The collections are vast. There are several MONET paintings. DEGA'S ballerina and a paintings by REMBRANDT and VAN GOGH. There is a huge selection of German painters like DIX, NOLDE, BECKMAN, KIRCHNER. You can also see Italian Renaissance paintings. Let's not forget the Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Asian Art. They also have a painting by STUART of George Washington. PLUS it is FREE!
One of but a handful of remnants leftover from the 1904 World's Fair. It's a stunning structure and the bottom of Art Hill lies a fully restored lake with ornate ornamentals and complete walking trail surrounding it. The artwork is wonderful inside. And it's free except for the occasional traveling art shows.
