Featuring a collection of more than 30,000 works of art, Saint Louis Art Museum counts among one of the country's major art institutions, attracting over half a million visitors each year. Erected for the 1904 World's Fair, the three-story building went through a massive restoration project in 2009 in which 21 new galleries were added, some for each of its permanent collection and temporary exhibits. The museum's star attraction is its modern art collection, including works by European masters Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Gauguin. Don't miss the gallery dedicated to 20th century German paintings that features the world's biggest collection of works by Max Beckmann, plus pieces by Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, and Martin Kippenberger. • One of my favorite places to visit in St Louis. The museum underwent a large expansion a few years ago and it's only gotten better. The main building dates back to the 1904 World's Fair and it beautiful. I love being in the main galleries and hearing the wood floors creak. It is free to visit. If you park in the parking garage there is a fee, but if you don't mind walking, you can park along the roads and that's free.
  • It is always a pleasure to visit SLAM. Our favorite event each year is Art in Bloom, but we have also been fortunate to attend a few lectures and, of course, special exhibits. I love all the ways they have to engage kids and families. I really can't say enough about what an enriching experience it is to visit. We are proud members!
  • Another museum I loved visiting. The art exhibits were more on the modern side but loved seeing it all. Loved the metal tree outside on the grass, that was probably my favorite but also loved the roman part of the exhibit. The building also very beautiful. You cannot go in with water and they will tell you that as you enter the building so drink up before going in. Had very clean restrooms which is always great and it is free to go in. They do have a gift shop if you want to grab a little souvenir. The only thing I thought was a little odd was that one of the security guards seemed to be following us around but I think its probably a normal thing so as to protect the art. Loved the view from the outside towards the pond in the front. Awesome place to go to!
  • Outstanding Museum. Architecturally the building is stunning and they have a nice sampling of many fine arts. Doesn’t hurt that it’s located in lovely Forest Park. Was there on a weekend and finding parking was a challenge. And, while I understand Chicago is much larger, it’s no Art Institute. Although, by the same token, the Art Institute is no Louvre.
  • Fantastic museum with a lot to see. We could have spent a whole day or more here and still not have seen everything. Love the way special exhibitions are added on a regular basis. There is a charge to see these but the rest of the museum is free.
