Lone Elk Park is a county park in the U.S. state of Missouri consisting of 546acres located in St. Louis County west of the town of Valley Park. The park is located adjacent to Interstate 44, the World Bird Sanctuary, Castlewood State Park, and Tyson Research Center.Lone Elk Park was originally part of the Tyson Valley Powder Plant during World War II. After the war the area became a county park and herds of elk and bison were established in 1948. The land was reacquired by the federal government during the Korean War, and the wildlife herds were destroyed for safety reasons in 1958, but one lone bull elk survived. In 1964 St. Louis County acquired 405acre for Tyson County Park, which became Lone Elk Park in 1966. The park officially opened on October 17, 1971 and six bison were acquired from the St. Louis Zoo in July 1973.There are driving routes that provide views of the elk and bison, often at close proximity. The park is also home to many deer, wild turkey and waterfowl. Domestic animals are not permitted whatsoever, even if confined to a vehicle. Since early 2016, the lake was being researched on if it was possible a sinkhole was under the lake. Now if you were to go by it the boat dock was removed with lots of gallons of water. During the year 2017, fishing will be closed to the lake in an effort to rebuild the fish population.

Great little drive thru park. You usually get up close sighting of deer and some bison. There are areas you can sit and have a picnic if you want to.  more »

We did the hiking loop and saw several Elk along the way. The trail wasn't too strenuous and provided a great 3.5 mile view of the park. There were a few uphill and downhill's, but overall not too bad...  more »

Discovered this Gem by accident, no fee, but they do ask for donations (which is well deserved). You can drive around the park which takes about 20-30 mins dependant on how many animals you see (you c...  more »

Always a fun, free, local getaway destination. A wildlife preserve where you can go and see Bison is always cool...and the Elk, are NOT lone. There are plenty to see! Picnic areas large enough to bring all your family and friends. Even hiking areas. Check it out!

Place is differently a place to go. You can see so much in such a small area. Walking with elk, seeing bisons. They have paths to walk in the park to that was fun with are kids and let them get up close and see how the elk acted. The lake is something to look at to. A plus is that this is right across from wild bird sanctuary.

I love this unique drive through park. You can find elk in the front section and bison in the back section. There are nice hiking trails in the elk portion of the park but you must stay in your car in the bison area.

This park used to be really nice a long time ago. Now, it is run down and barely any clean up. Used mostly for drug users and sexual escapades. Totally disappointed in what it has become. Only animals left are a few deer, water turtles and racoons.

One of the county's best parks. Amazing, upclose wildlife and spectacular scenery. Very well kept, multiple covered areas for group outings with restrooms as well. Kid-friendly. Check out the wildbird sanctuary while your there, its all free!
