Government Building Historic Site
Visit one of the city's most famous landmarks at Gateway Arch & Old Courthouse, the site of the beginnings of the famous Dred Scott court case. Completed in 1864, the 59 m (192 ft) tall building has long been an integral part of the local skyline. Join a guided tour of the domed building to learn more about its historical significance, including the 1846 case in which the escaped slave Dred Scott sued for his freedom, a pivotal moment in the lead-up to the Civil War. View the impressive interior of the courthouse, including the dome's decorative ceiling and several restored courtrooms dating to the early 20th century. Keep in mind that you must organize tours in advance by phone with the park rangers. • Great place to see some history. Beautifully built and excellent maintenance work. You can pickup tickets for the Arch and buy some cool gifts.
  • What a great place to begin your visit to St Louis! Fantastic help with recommendations, tickets, information and local attractions. Lots of history and a great gift shop, too.
  • History bluffs paradise. So much to see and learn the history that can really amaze an person with the deepest touch. The old court rooms and the top dome can make an photographer stay all day. I personally recommend everybody to go there.
  • Don't fret about the construction--it will be done soon enough, and then the park will be even better than before! A lot of folks don't realize that the Old Courthouse is part of the park, and that there are some fascinating displays inside. Be sure to allow time to see both that building and the Arch. Once all construction is said and done, the easiest thing to do is park in the Kiener East garage at Broadway and Pine, walk over to the Old Courthouse, then walk down to the Arch.
  • Very pretty building. Loved the history, but they need to start some restorations if they want to keep it around.
