Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, Saint Louis

Must see · Church · Tourist Spot
Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is home to one of the largest mosaic installations in the Western Hemisphere. The mosaic took 76 years to complete and contains 41.5 million glass tesserae pieces. The breathtaking pieces in the main cathedral were designed by August Oetken, including the famous depiction of the life of King Louis IX of France, for whom the church and city are named. Pope John Paul II officially designated it a basilica in 1997, but believers, historians, and art lovers from around the world have visited this cathedral since it held its first mass in 1914. In addition to its astonishing mosaic collection, the cathedral is also known for its crypts, museum, stained glass, and sculptures. • Beautiful space to pray. The mosaic artwork is spectacular and breathtaking. Masses and Reconciliation offered every day at convenient time. There's even a small museum under the church that details the construction of the Cathedral Basilica. Fascinating history. I appreciate the extra details that go into the Mass to help us focus on worship.
  • This church is so beautiful! It even has a little museum at the bottom floor and a gift shop on the first. It has multiple side-chapels and many confessionals too. Just a beautiful sight to see while in St. Louis, and see the mass! It’s great to be a Catholic!
  • What a beautiful cathedral! The green roof is very unique. We only visited for a short time since we were only in the city for less than 24 hours, but wished we could have enjoyed Mass here.
  • This is the most beautiful Catholic Cathedral I have visited in America. The mosaics are spectacular and the tours are really interesting. The history book about the place and the book about the mosaics are well worth the money.
  • It is a step back into history and the architecture and mosaics a tribute to craftsmanship. A must see when in St. Louis. They have a guided tour after the noon Mass. Its an hour well spent.
