#2 of 66 in Historic Sites in Missouri
Church Tourist Spot
Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is home to one of the largest mosaic installations in the Western Hemisphere. The mosaic took 76 years to complete and contains 41.5 million glass tesserae pieces. The breathtaking pieces in the main cathedral were designed by August Oetken, including the famous depiction of the life of King Louis IX of France, for whom the church and city are named. Pope John Paul II officially designated it a basilica in 1997, but believers, historians, and art lovers from around the world have visited this cathedral since it held its first mass in 1914. In addition to its astonishing mosaic collection, the cathedral is also known for its crypts, museum, stained glass, and sculptures. • This is a functioning church in the heart of St. Louis. The mosaics are amazing - I believe this is the largest mosaic in north America. Well worth a visit.  more »

  • +JMJ Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful! House of Prayer and Worship. While on Retreat in High Ridge MO, also made time to visit area Churches. Was so glad to be able to stop in for a moment to pray, then to walk around in admiration of the beautiful architecture, statues, and artwork displayed for the honor and glory of God, Creator of all that is beautiful. Stepping into a beautiful building dedicated to placing before the eyes of men, women, and children a little bit of the supernatural beauty of Heaven always refreshes my soul. This was a very personal visit between me and God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. Oh! so lovely for a brief respite from the tumult of life's cares.
  • The place is absolutely beautiful. The experience is well worth it. The doors themselves to the building are so heavy and solid it's a wonder just opening them. Very unique. I know that they give guided tours by very knowledgable and entertaining guides. Very great experience.
  • This is truly a glory to God. The architecture is divine. Cathedral Basilica is a blessed treasure in St. Louis. You can feel the Holy Spirit radiating through this magnificent structure. An amazing place to peacefully reflect, meditate & pray. Thanks be to God.
  • Absolutely beautiful! If you're a fan of architecture and of mosaics, this place is definitely worth seeing!! The entire ceiling is completely covered hundreds of thousands os small tiles that make up ornate designs and beautiful pictures. My husband and I attended a mass there this past Sunday. We had no problem finding parking on the street, which is amazing! The mass was pretty full and we sat near the back and off to the side. I couldn't believe the beautiful art that completely surrounded us on all sides!
  • Great place to visit and attend mass. There's a museum in the basement that has the altar the Pope used during his 1999 visit. I recommend you visit.
