Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, Saint Louis

4.9
Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is home to one of the largest mosaic installations in the Western Hemisphere. The mosaic took 76 years to complete and contains 41.5 million glass tesserae pieces. The breathtaking pieces in the main cathedral were designed by August Oetken, including the famous depiction of the life of King Louis IX of France, for whom the church and city are named. Pope John Paul II officially designated it a basilica in 1997, but believers, historians, and art lovers from around the world have visited this cathedral since it held its first mass in 1914. In addition to its astonishing mosaic collection, the cathedral is also known for its crypts, museum, stained glass, and sculptures. • Just breath taking. It demands respect and instantly humbles you. Best thing we seen in St Louis by far. AMAZING
  • A must see if you are in STL. Has awesome mosaic collection. The small museum in the basement is worth visiting. Parking on street as well as adjoining lot works our great.
  • There is plenty of facility and on-street parking in the area. If you plan on visiting, pay attention to the service and event schedule. You may want to consider a guided tour to learn more about the history of the church and it's mosaics. Otherwise, you will be stuck staring at ceilings and statues without any information.
  • The Cathedral is without peer in the US. The beauty and mosaics are breathtaking. It's truly an inspiration to your faith.
  • A magnificent work of art that rivals the Vatican. Smartphone photos cannot do justice to the mosaics. If you don't have a camera, I suggest a few picture postcards that are available in the gift shop. Don't forget to explore the Museum on the lower level. It provides a true appreciation of the difficulty and artistry required to create so much beauty. I found ample free street parking on a Sunday after lunch.
