Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is home to one of the largest mosaic installations in the Western Hemisphere. The mosaic took 76 years to complete and contains 41.5 million glass tesserae pieces. The breathtaking pieces in the main cathedral were designed by August Oetken, including the famous depiction of the life of King Louis IX of France, for whom the church and city are named. Pope John Paul II officially designated it a basilica in 1997, but believers, historians, and art lovers from around the world have visited this cathedral since it held its first mass in 1914. In addition to its astonishing mosaic collection, the cathedral is also known for its crypts, museum, stained glass, and sculptures. • If you have not yet been to the Basilica and live in St. Louis, drop what you're doing and plan your visit immediately. I was shocked at how easily accessible it was, and how it felt like I was stepping into a European sacred oasis. I was able to sit, pray, and reflect for an hour uninterrupted. The mosaics all over the cathedral are stunning. You also can get a guided tour of you call in advance. There also is a museum downstairs you can pay extra $2 get into. Take a moment to unplug and unwind at this amazing facility!
  • Absolutely amazing cathedral. I've traveled most of Europe and this basilica is easily one of the top ones I've seen. Not only is the church itself amazing, but I also had the most splendid conversation with a tour guide named Larry. I highly recommend going to see this amazing cathedral.
  • Beautiful artwork, a place with history, a place founded on beliefs, this place has so much to offer. Walking through the vast Cathedral you will see some of the most beautiful pieces of religious art. Plus it cant hurt anybody to go into a church once in awhile.
  • This place is amazing. Take a tour and visit the museum in the basement. Please be aware of mass times and check those before you come tour. This is a beautiful and wonderful place to pray.
  • Absolutely beautiful place. Its so surreal and peaceful the moment you walk through the door. They do have a few rules posted at the door, but nothing crazy... more of a reminder to be respectful. If there isn't a service going on you're free to walk the entire cathedral's first floor. Everywhere you looks is just gorgeous... and you don't know which way to go/look next. Take your time and really take in all the beauty and amazing architecture that surrounds you. There is a mosaic museum in the basement ($2 donation) as well as a gift shop (which was closed on the day we went). Definitely worth a stop at least once when you visit the Saint Louis area
