Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, Saint Louis

(4.9/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web)
Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is home to one of the largest mosaic installations in the Western Hemisphere. The mosaic took 76 years to complete and contains 41.5 million glass tesserae pieces. The breathtaking pieces in the main cathedral were designed by August Oetken, including the famous depiction of the life of King Louis IX of France, for whom the church and city are named. Pope John Paul II officially designated it a basilica in 1997, but believers, historians, and art lovers from around the world have visited this cathedral since it held its first mass in 1914. In addition to its astonishing mosaic collection, the cathedral is also known for its crypts, museum, stained glass, and sculptures. • If you have not yet been to the Basilica and live in St. Louis, drop what you're doing and plan your visit immediately. I was shocked at how easily accessible it was, and how it felt like I was stepping into a European sacred oasis. I was able to sit, pray, and reflect for an hour uninterrupted. The mosaics all over the cathedral are stunning. You also can get a guided tour of you call in advance. There also is a museum downstairs you can pay extra $2 get into. Take a moment to unplug and unwind at this amazing facility!
  • “magnificent, ... grand” Reviewed February 28, 2013 i dont know how to reach there, but my friend took me there while i was visiting missouri. the first impression is, i'm amazed. there is no such kind of a huge, grand, magnificent, beautiful church in asia. the walls, the ceilings, and almost any areas are full of decoration & motive, commonly called as mozaic. too bad that i only took photo with my phone. i should've brought a camera.
  • This is a phenomenally beautiful church, but sadly, while there, I chose to light a candle for my grandmother. One of the church employees approached me as I was paying and accused me of lighting multiple candles. I only lit one and said so. He huffed and said he had seen me light a full row of them. I'm not sure why he would accuse me of something like this as it was completely inaccurate. I'm so disappointed by the experience and I left feel really sad. I never write reviews, but I had to about this.
  • Absolutely amazing cathedral. I've traveled most of Europe and this basilica is easily one of the top ones I've seen. Not only is the church itself amazing, but I also had the most splendid conversation with a tour guide named Larry. I highly recommend going to see this amazing cathedral.
  • Beautiful artwork, a place with history, a place founded on beliefs, this place has so much to offer. Walking through the vast Cathedral you will see some of the most beautiful pieces of religious art. Plus it cant hurt anybody to go into a church once in awhile.
