Krug Park, Saint Joseph
(4.3/5 based on 75+ reviews on the web)
Krug Park, located at the northern end of the Parkway St. Joseph in Saint Joseph, Missouri, is a large city park with Italian Renaissance structures, extensive landscaping and flowerbeds. The park's 163acre house an amphitheater, a lagoon, rose gardens, picnic areas, an Italian castle, scenic walking trails, and various playgrounds. Also featured is a North American native animal exhibit housing buffalo, deer, and longhorn cattle. Krug Park "lights up" during the holiday season as Holiday Park.HistoryThe park is often referred to as St. Joseph's oldest park. While other areas were given for public use earlier, it is true that Krug Park was the first public outing area under the jurisdiction of the board of park commissioners which received public expenditure. As such, it was developed before any other parks. On February 26, 1890, Henry Krug, donated 10acre to the City for use exclusively as a park, on the conditions "that no intoxicating liquors shall ever be kept, sold or disposed of in or upon said premises...nor shall any gambling or gambling devices be permitted." The City was to keep the park in good condition, under police control, and expend annually at least $2,000.00 under the direction of the park commissioners.Early plans of Krug Park are not available, but from narrative sources it appears that the City quickly spent in excess of the required $2,000.00 per year. As St. Joseph's only developed public space, Krug Park became the "catch-all" for everything that the public seemed to desire. Park Superintendent Rudolph G. Rau seemed particularly fond of flower displays and formally designed beds, and Krug Park boasted many such spectacular displays. It also had at one time a zoo, greenhouses, botanical gardens, gazebos, the Robidoux cabin, a fountain, and a lily pond.

  • Just revisited the park after an absence of two years. Many improvements have been made and the park is truly lovelier than before. No trip to St Joe would be complete without a visit to the park.
  • Once a thriving attraction of the city during it's heyday, when the population of the city was almost double what it is now, Krug Park is only a shadow of what it was in it's prime. Still a nice place...  more »
  • Have seen pictures of the park in late/early 1800/1900. It was beautiful. But as many assets of Saint Joseph it has been allowed to crumble to ruins. They have done a renovation of the pond which has ...  more »

  • I've gone to this park since I was a child and have always had the same feeling of awe Everytime I go through. Krug has some fantastic walking trails as well as playgrounds and an extremely nice pond to both admire and feed ducks at. The decision to reuse the waterfall was a great idea. It adds some relaxing noise if you want to just sit by the pond and hang out. The park has a great garden in the summertime.
  • Great park. They just redid the lagoon and waterfall. Great place to feed the ducks, just remember bread not recommended by conservationists, things like half cut grapes, cracked corn, or bird seed are better them. Newer playground equipment. Lots of shelters for picnics. Outdoor auditorium. Great place to visit during December when it becomes Holiday Park, bring a couple dollars for donation and get free cherry mashes for the family!
  • What a wonderful park to take your family to in St. Joseph. The lagoon area is always fun to walk around and feed bread crumbs to the ducks and geese. The hiking trails in the back of the park give miles to explore and you may even stumble across the beautiful waterfall. During December, the park becomes holiday park and is the most impressive display of Christmas lights I've ever seen. It can be a bit of a wait for holiday park on Friday and Saturday night, but it is always worth it.
  • The city has started fixing the park up again. It's always been a beautiful park and still is. There are toys for the kids. Covered areas for picnics. And also grills. It's always clean. There's alot of beautiful ground to take long walks on. And of course you can't forget the bridge you drive under. Don't forget to honk!
  • Great place for the family. Wish there were more flowers planted through out, but still a wonderful park with waterfall features, playgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails and animals.
