Krug Park, Saint Joseph

(85+ reviews on the web)
Krug Park, located at the northern end of the Parkway St. Joseph in Saint Joseph, Missouri, is a large city park with Italian Renaissance structures, extensive landscaping and flowerbeds. The park's 163acre house an amphitheater, a lagoon, rose gardens, picnic areas, an Italian castle, scenic walking trails, and various playgrounds. Also featured is a North American native animal exhibit housing buffalo, deer, and longhorn cattle. Krug Park "lights up" during the holiday season as Holiday Park.HistoryThe park is often referred to as St. Joseph's oldest park. While other areas were given for public use earlier, it is true that Krug Park was the first public outing area under the jurisdiction of the board of park commissioners which received public expenditure. As such, it was developed before any other parks. On February 26, 1890, Henry Krug, donated 10acre to the City for use exclusively as a park, on the conditions "that no intoxicating liquors shall ever be kept, sold or disposed of in or upon said premises...nor shall any gambling or gambling devices be permitted." The City was to keep the park in good condition, under police control, and expend annually at least $2,000.00 under the direction of the park commissioners.Early plans of Krug Park are not available, but from narrative sources it appears that the City quickly spent in excess of the required $2,000.00 per year. As St. Joseph's only developed public space, Krug Park became the "catch-all" for everything that the public seemed to desire. Park Superintendent Rudolph G. Rau seemed particularly fond of flower displays and formally designed beds, and Krug Park boasted many such spectacular displays. It also had at one time a zoo, greenhouses, botanical gardens, gazebos, the Robidoux cabin, a fountain, and a lily pond.

  • The ponds and waterfalls were very pretty (man-made). There were some people swimming in them with their rowdy kids, so that was irritating because it scared the ducks away. The drive through the park...  more »

  • This is a real jewel. It's to bad the city can't or won't use it to it's full potential. A great amphitheater that is never used. Come on Saint Joe, really , parties on the parkway and in a field, but can't use this great venue.
  • I love bringing my kids to Krug park when the weather is nice. They really did a wonderful job on the new pond. Thank you for working so hard to restore its beauty. Please restore the castle. And make use of the castle grounds instead of leaving it empty. Make a garden for the city to tend to. Or add a labyrinth. Think of something artistic to add. The Castle really looks out of place now. It needs to be updated bad.
  • Was beautiful there! My bestfriend got married there! Had a really great experience there. Will never forget it. Loved the scenery! It is absolutely gorgeous there!
  • Great drive through the park, excellent Holiday Lights (kind of quirky but a huge local tradition), two playgrounds, feed the ducks.
  • A well maintained and a beautiful park. Drove here from Kansas City. Wasn't disappointed! It has a nice open theater as well.
