  • There were several different sites where we could mine, and parking was easy. There are outdoor play areas for kids that are close to the mining area. They also have cabins, but we didn't stay overnig...  more »

  • I have been going here since for at least 15 years now. Over the years I have accumulated a lot of Herkimer diamonds. In my opinion the best way to go about it is to look in the spoil piles after it rains or using old trailor springs and metal wood wedges to drive under the rock and pop it upwards to find pockets (or break down larger chunks of rock that have been removed from the wall). Best to bring big sledge hammers and chisels. This is a campground for a get-away. It is the best place to enjoy nature, read a book, play some cards, and eat campfire food. I definitely recommend getting to know Cecily and Evan (the owners). Cecily is very crafty and knowledgeable (especially about birds and jewelry making!) and Evan is one of the funniest down to earth people I know. They are a blast to play card games with. If you are in the area Cooperstown baseball hall of fame and Ommegang Brewery are great places to visit as well!
  • We had a great time mining but it seemed like everyone that worked there was in pretty bad spirits. We'll go back but won't expect any smiling faces.
  • I live in the state of Mass and drive 3 hours to go camping and mining I prefer Crystal Grove over Herkimer because it is family owned and the owners are very pleasant. We have been going to Crystal Grove for the last 10 years and it is a great place to take your children if they are up for an adventure and digging in the dirt. We just spent 4 day there with 7 kids ranging from the ages of 4 to 17 and we all had a great time.. The kids played on the playground we went for a walk on the nature trails, and to keep the kids cool (who needs a pool) they played in the creek for a whole day boy I could not get them out of it.. They love frogs and there were tons ... But best of all we went digging for the beautiful Diamonds in the mines.. We dug in the dirt, walked around the mines and of course cracked open some rocks... We had a great time ... Thanks so much
  • First time camping there and i would recommend it to anyone. Very clean, very quite, great mining and the management is very nice and personable. I even got a chance to sit down with one of the owners, Evan and have a few beers, very nice man. It felt like he was a longtime friend. Kids had a great time, Evan even drove my son and I around the campground at night in his golf cart. We will definitely be coming back. Thanks for having us.
  • just got back from the camp with my troop (BSA 32, NY)! its to this day, one of my favorite camps i have been to in my life, besides yellow stone national park. the owners are the nicest people. I cant wait to go there again!!!
