  • A very good visit in this elegant plantation and its beautiful gardens. Our guide was a bit steep at first (especially since we were a group of two people, no need to be too stilted in this context!) but relaxed and answered all of our questions. The alley of Oaks is superb... In contrast, very little on the slaves on which rested all this sumptuousness.

  • Walking up to the house and seeing the layout of the gardens and the long driveway surrounded by large oak trees was magnificent. One can take a wonderful photo of the grounds from the second floor ba...  more »
  • Beautiful grounds and the home is meticulously restored. We live in the area and have been to many antebellum homes and this ranks near the top. Probably best in the spring when the 25 acre gardens ar...  more »

  • Last tour of the day on a gray and wet Saturday, and the tour guide was unquestionably & plainly uninterested and ready to go home. There were only four of us on the tour and the other couple was from France. I wasn't expecting this tour to explain the experiences of the enslaved population on this plantation beyond the statistics, but when the ONLY comment a tour guide chooses to make in reference to slavery on a Southern plantation is that "the family treated their slaves really well" I am offended by the indifference and ridiculous nature of the statement. Better to say nothing at all then to perpetuate this singular scenario in your script. We later asked if John Audubon had painted the portrait of a young woman that was similar to a portrait we saw at Oakley Plantation. The guide explained emphatically that "Audubon never painted portraits, he only painted birds and animals" and that the guide at Oakley who had attributed their painting to Audubon "was wrong." At that point I wondered if anything our guide at Rosedown had said on the tour was true. The gardens, the home, and the furnishings of Rosedown Plantation are spectacular and should not be missed. The tour itself was disappointing and may have been an exception judging from the other reviews, but every guide on every tour is presenting the history of our country and should be mindful of that.
  • Beautiful grounds and plantation home! The tour guide was wonderful and very informative. It's definitely a must see if you're in the area.
  • Fascinating return to what plantation like must have been like preCivil War. House and grounds spectacular. Guide unfortunately sounded like a canned recording.
  • The grounds are in need of a lot of help. Maybe a garden club or friends if Rosedown could help. The Spanish moss has taken over and could stand to be cleaned out. It was claustrophobic. It could be grand again. Bob, the plantation cat, escorted us around the grounds, until we came to the house and toured it. The human guide did an amazing job of explaining and showing the house. It just breaks my heart that it needs so much work, but worth the stop.
  • Great place to walk through and smell the flowers . Tour was nice. Very informative.
