Interstate State Park- Wisconsin, Saint Croix Falls

(4.4/5 based on 90+ reviews on the web)
Interstate Park comprises two adjacent state parks on the Minnesota–Wisconsin border, both named Interstate State Park. They straddle the Dalles of the St. Croix River, a deep basalt gorge with glacial potholes and other rock formations. The Wisconsin park is 1330acre and the Minnesota park is 298acre. The towns of Taylors Falls, Minnesota and St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin are adjacent to the park. Interstate Park is within the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway and the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve. The western terminus of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail is on the Wisconsin side. On the Minnesota side, two areas contain National Park Service rustic style buildings and structures that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Geology1.1 billion years ago, a series of volcanic eruptions from the Midcontinent Rift System sent at least ten separate lava flows across the region that now includes Interstate Park. These flows hardened into basalt, which fractured at several joints. In the Cambrian period, between 530 and 470 million years ago, the region was covered by a shallow sea which deposited sandstone and siltstone atop the basalt. This epoch of the Cambrian, the Furongian, was originally called the Croixian in North America because the layers exposed in this area were its type locality.

  • Great way to spend the day. Malt shop not far, sculpture garden up on the hill and rocks to climb for the kids. One complaint was that on a Saturday in early April all there was for a bathroom was one port-a-potty and it was disgustingly full. But I'm sure it's not like that all the time.
  • Amazing views, huge cliffs, and a soothing river. It is an amazing park that is only an hour or so away from downtown Minneapolis.
  • This place was beautiful. Only $5 for parking for the entire day. Gorgeous scenery.
  • Good for picnics and some scenic hikes. Very popular starting point for canoeing or kayaking to the Osceola landing, beautiful section of the St. Croix.
  • Close enough to go to as a day trip with the family (if you live in the Twin Cities). Nice, lightly technical 1.5ish mile hike with great views of a river (St. Croix, I believe) with some cliffs. At the end of the trail, in Taylor's Falls, there are many touristy shops and the typical places that suck money out of your wallet when you have a family. If you can fight off the wife and kids giving you sad, puppy dog eyes and avoid spending money in Taylor's Falls, there are at least a few, much cheaper places to get ice cream on your way back to the Cities.
