Interstate State Park- Wisconsin, Saint Croix Falls

#1 of 6 in Things to do in Saint Croix Falls
Interstate Park comprises two adjacent state parks on the Minnesota–Wisconsin border, both named Interstate State Park. They straddle the Dalles of the St. Croix River, a deep basalt gorge with glacial potholes and other rock formations. The Wisconsin park is 1330acre and the Minnesota park is 298acre. The towns of Taylors Falls, Minnesota and St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin are adjacent to the park. Interstate Park is within the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway and the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve. The western terminus of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail is on the Wisconsin side. On the Minnesota side, two areas contain National Park Service rustic style buildings and structures that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Geology1.1 billion years ago, a series of volcanic eruptions from the Midcontinent Rift System sent at least ten separate lava flows across the region that now includes Interstate Park. These flows hardened into basalt, which fractured at several joints. In the Cambrian period, between 530 and 470 million years ago, the region was covered by a shallow sea which deposited sandstone and siltstone atop the basalt. This epoch of the Cambrian, the Furongian, was originally called the Croixian in North America because the layers exposed in this area were its type locality.

  • Great park for experiencing the Saint Croix river. Rent kayaks or canoes and float down one of the most scenic rivers in the world. Check out the world's largest potholes in the rock formations near the river. These deep holes in the rocks come from fire and ice and sand, and were formed over the ever-changing eons. The depth of some of these mysterious and fascinating holes have still today not been determined! Don't slip!
  • This is my favorite park to visit! It has a lot of different hiking trails, there are incredible views of the river, and you can take rock climbing classes. There are many signs that tell you the history of the potholes, which is a very interesting topic to learn about. I highly recommend going on a boat cruise down the river, because you learn about the river and identify shapes, animals, and historical figures in the rocks. My whole family loves it, and I think everyone who goes to Interstate Park love it too.
  • Beautiful state park. One of my favorites! Great hiking, paths, etc. If bringing small children, make sure you hold their hand, or, better yet, have a kid leash. It allowed my 1 year old to climb all over, but not get hurt. You wouldn't want them to fall off a cliff!
  • Incredible on both sides of the river. There are awesome views and hiking. The potholes are a very unique feature on the MN side. Watch the children closely, there are steep cliffs in both parks. The people most often injured however are not children, they are teen to adults being to adventurous.
  • One of my favorite state parks, beautiful scenery and great hiking trails with varying degrees of difficulty and easily accessible parking to access both sides (MN and WI) with each side side being unique and beautiful!
