Nature / Park
Interstate Park comprises two adjacent state parks on the Minnesota–Wisconsin border, both named Interstate State Park. They straddle the Dalles of the St. Croix River, a deep basalt gorge with glacial potholes and other rock formations. The Wisconsin park is 1330acre and the Minnesota park is 298acre. The towns of Taylors Falls, Minnesota and St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin are adjacent to the park. Interstate Park is within the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway and the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve. The western terminus of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail is on the Wisconsin side. On the Minnesota side, two areas contain National Park Service rustic style buildings and structures that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Geology1.1 billion years ago, a series of volcanic eruptions from the Midcontinent Rift System sent at least ten separate lava flows across the region that now includes Interstate Park. These flows hardened into basalt, which fractured at several joints. In the Cambrian period, between 530 and 470 million years ago, the region was covered by a shallow sea which deposited sandstone and siltstone atop the basalt. This epoch of the Cambrian, the Furongian, was originally called the Croixian in North America because the layers exposed in this area were its type locality.

  • Short trails but good ones. Awesome views of the river. The lake was not so clear. But people were enjoying it.  more »

  • Great park, though I only made it to the Minnesota side. The glacial potholes are impressive and quite weird in a great way—they're just something new and strange. The river and the hiking are gorgeous, I'd highly recommend taking an afternoon to visit.
  • Great mountain ranges to climb on. Perfect if you're an experienced rock climber. Beautiful lake and scenery. Definitely a special park, if you're in the area i suggest stopping by.
  • I like visiting state parks. The big pro of this one is the area by the river with natural holes to see in the rock. That is really cool. The hiking trails were less then average on account of being frequently near a busy road but the views of the river were breathtaking
  • It was early Sunday morning when we stopped there to use the bathrooms and take a walk. It has a shelter house that is pretty basic. The playground equipment is dated. The dock and boat landing seemed to be ok but needed as bit of attention. The bathrooms were the worst I have seen for a park. The smell is horrific, toilet paper was all over the floor and not on the holder and the toilets ate not flush, the toilets themselves were filthy. We felt like you should have been wearing a hazmat suit just to step in there. My husband and both walked around in the dewy grass to make sure our shoes were clean before we got back in the car
  • Love this park and campgrounds on the MN side! You can legally consume alcohol on the Wisconsin side campgrounds. I'd cross the border for that legality.
