Mount Angel Abbey, Saint Benedict

4.8
Mount Angel Abbey is a private Roman Catholic seminary, university, and community of Benedictine monks in St. Benedict, Oregon, United States. It was established in 1882 from the Abbey of Engelberg, Switzerland. The abbey, located on the top of Mount Angel, a 485-foot-high butte (148 m), has its own post office separate from the city of Mt. Angel's—Saint Benedict.

The Seminary is located within the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon but it also serves as the major seminary for the Diocese of Baker, the Diocese of Boise, the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings, and the Diocese of Helena. The Archdiocese of Seattle sends its College Seminarians to Bishop White Seminary along with the Diocese of Spokane and the Diocese of Yakima. The seminarians are then given the choice of attending either University of Saint Mary of the Lake or Mount Angel.
The seminary offers degrees to both lay students and those studying for the priesthood. The undergraduate school offers bachelor's degrees to seminarians in philosophy, literature, and religious studies. The graduate school offers master's degrees to both seminarians and lay students in theology, scripture studies, and philosophy.

  • Wonderful people, nice bookstore and coffee shop. Enjoyed Abbey. Excellent library, church, cemetery, and museum. Abbey on hill with amazing view over valley, and nice shaded area where one could stay with dog while other partner explored. No dogs allowed in buildings, but allowed on grounds. Enjoyed so much went back a second time.
  • Mt. Angel Abbey has to be one of my favorite places in the world to go. The bookstore is no exception! Everyone here is friendly and easy to talk to.
  • Beautiful. peaceful, atmosphere with kind helpful people with great attitudes, guest and workers alike.
  • GREAT little store for getting GREAT homemade gifts from local crafters! A must see!
  • Small bookstore with books and religious themed gifts. Cards, rosaries etc. Food items ( honey, cookies, fudge and jams )made by monks and sisters from other retreats. Adjoining coffee shop. Beautiful adjoining grounds with nice views.
