Basilica Cathedral, Saint Augustine

4.7/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web
The historical Basilica Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic bishop of St. Augustine. First established in the 1560s, the cathedral was named a National Historic Landmark in 1970. The Spanish Colonial-style cathedral that stands today is the fourth attempt to establish a lasting church in the city. The three previous buildings burned down: once due to natural causes and twice from British attacks. Today's cathedral was built from coquina stone quarried from nearby to help make it more fireproof. Visit "America's First Parish" for a closer look at the colonial history of this quaint town. The church's interiors have been undergoing some reconstruction, so you might need to duck under scaffolding. • They just gave the interior a face lift. Amazing to attend mass in the oldest city on the continent.
  • Wonderful to step into a cool, serene atmosphere. Not religious but enjoy the history of the buildings. Only needed about 15 mins to view.
  • All the artwork, the building inside and out is just amazing to see. Even if you aren't a Catholic, you can enjoy this stunning piece of history.
  • Beautiful. Simply Stunning. Its a breathtaking building... inside and out. I have been here probably 20 times. Im not super religious, but it sure is an enlightening experience each time I am here. It is a work of art in so many ways. It's been burned down and rebuilt etc... It has a ton of history. It's somewhere you should visit. The doors are open, go inside. It's ok, no one will bite. Religious or not. Try it, it won't fail to satisfy.
  • Beautiful place! If you go St. Augustine this place must be in your to do list. Just check before going to see whether they have anything ongoing there. They don't let the visitors in when they have something there.
  • It's a beautiful church, very well maintained and the little garden area is cute and quaint. Definitely worth exploring!
  • "The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is the pride and joy of Florida." Bishop Estevez made this comment about a month ago at Mass. The basilica is truly beautiful: red ceiling and wooden trusses rise above golden statues of Jesus, St. Peter, and St. Augustine in the sanctuary. A choir sings for every Mass at 7:00, 9:00, 11:00, and 5:00. Parking around the basilica is tough. Head past the church, make a right onto Cordova, a left onto Valencia, and a right onto Sevilla. I usually find a spot around here. You may have to drive up and down a few streets before finding a spot. It all depends on how busy the city is at the time of your visit.
  • Amazing. Beautiful. Breathtaking
