Basilica Cathedral, Saint Augustine

(4.7/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
The historical Basilica Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic bishop of St. Augustine. First established in the 1560s, the cathedral was named a National Historic Landmark in 1970. The Spanish Colonial-style cathedral that stands today is the fourth attempt to establish a lasting church in the city. The three previous buildings burned down: once due to natural causes and twice from British attacks. Today's cathedral was built from coquina stone quarried from nearby to help make it more fireproof. Visit "America's First Parish" for a closer look at the colonial history of this quaint town. The church's interiors have been undergoing some reconstruction, so you might need to duck under scaffolding. • Beautiful Spanish style which is different from most Catholic cathedrals. Very unique and we'll worth a visit.
  • We were met inside this beautiful basilica by a docent who gave us many interesting details about the paintings and the stained glass. If you like cathedrals you shouldn't miss this!
  • Always we visited churches that we are on our way and this was no exception. They are beautiful and allow a small space to be with God and thank for all these trips!

  • It's a must see for anyone visiting St Augustine. Very beautiful building.
  • The history and the artwork make this Church well worth visiting. If you're visiting St. Augustine and want to see something besides the shops and restaurants, stop in here. You won't be sorry.
  • Great place. Architecture, stained glass, and art is excellent.
  • Beautiful place! If you go St. Augustine this place must be in your to do list. Just check before going to see whether they have anything ongoing there. They don't let the visitors in when they have something there.
  • "The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is the pride and joy of Florida." Bishop Estevez made this comment about a month ago at Mass. The basilica is truly beautiful: red ceiling and wooden trusses rise above golden statues of Jesus, St. Peter, and St. Augustine in the sanctuary. A choir sings for every Mass at 7:00, 9:00, 11:00, and 5:00. Parking around the basilica is tough. Head past the church, make a right onto Cordova, a left onto Valencia, and a right onto Sevilla. I usually find a spot around here. You may have to drive up and down a few streets before finding a spot. It all depends on how busy the city is at the time of your visit.
