Sutter's Fort State Historic Park, Sacramento

4.2
#1 of 10 in Sightseeing in Sacramento
Architectural Building Nature / Park
The site of the first European settlement in the region and resting place for many travelers who were headed west, Sutter's Fort State Historic Park recalls the pioneering spirit of the California Gold Rush's early years. Founded in 1839 by John Sutter, the fortified structure has since been restored and today is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wander the grounds and view the adobe-style architecture of the central building (the only original surviving structure), which is surrounded by thick walls, defensive towers, and other buildings. Stop by the museum to view items owned by early pioneers who sought aid from the fort, including some from the infamous Donner Party. You can also join a guided tour to learn more about the history of the short-lived settlement, the region, and its residents. Where to stay in Sacramento

Sacramento boasts a number of hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts that vary in price and character. Units downtown provide easy access to the majority of the city's attractions and nightlife but tend to be more expensive. If you are flying in or out of the city, consider one of the hotels near Sacramento International Airport for convenience. Vacation rentals are ideal if you are planning a longer stay in the city, with many located in quieter residential neighborhoods.

  • Much more than we expected. Seeing the children dressed up and reacting with the instructors was rejuvinating. Some parts of the narration were not quite accurate. The Carronades were not made in Engl...  more »
  • Interesting history to get familiar with. Audio explanations were very informative around the different rooms in the fort. Video was just the right length.  more »

  • Many of the docents enjoyed discussing life in the fort with my children. They appear to love educating. Too bad the public school group was rushing their students through... none of them stopped long enough to really listen or learn.
  • This is a lovely park to walk around. There are two museums that charge - the old fort and the Native American museum. Both are worth the money. Be sure to visit the guest shop at the Native American museum! They have great jewelry and art at reasonable prices.
  • Visited on a Monday. Probably not a prime day to visit as I did not come across 1 volunteer. Lots of school kids roaming around which was good to see. They were dressed up in what was thought to be period garb. Kind of fun. The self guided tour was...ok. I found quite a bit of repetition between the points of interest. Very neat preservation of the area which makes for a unique destination among the corporate and residential buildings surrounding. A must see? Probably not. Worth your time? If you have some extra morning or afternoon.
  • So much to learn and see. Amazing views. Easy walking path, flat dirt. Great family learning experience.
  • Very interesting to see how people lived in the 1800s. Takes about an hour to see the fort. It can be very hot and there's not much shade at the fort also it can be crowded because the fort is so famous.
