Sutter's Fort State Historic Park, Sacramento

(4.1/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
The site of the first European settlement in the region and resting place for many travelers who were headed west, Sutter's Fort State Historic Park recalls the pioneering spirit of the California Gold Rush's early years. Founded in 1839 by John Sutter, the fortified structure has since been restored and today is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wander the grounds and view the adobe-style architecture of the central building (the only original surviving structure), which is surrounded by thick walls, defensive towers, and other buildings. Stop by the museum to view items owned by early pioneers who sought aid from the fort, including some from the infamous Donner Party. You can also join a guided tour to learn more about the history of the short-lived settlement, the region, and its residents. • Sacramento has wonderful history. The Sutter Fort is a great place to start, when wanting to learn the origins of the Sacramento community. There is a small fee for entrance, however it's well worth it. Inside the fort you will find people dressed in early and mid 19th century costume. There is a live cannon show that really starts the day off with a bang. If history is your cup of tea,? Then plan a stop here.
  • The information was good. However it was raining and there was no cover for our group of children. We were asked to to outside the fort for 45 mins. in the rain. Not fun.Probally not there fault, but still tainted the experience for us.
  • Amazing place to visit! There's so much rich Sacramento history to explore and be a part of! The staff are very friendly and helpful too! There was a worker there named Ken who demonstrated to me how the Sutter's Fort settlers made buckets and barrels to carry water, wine, flour, and other goods. Anyone who visits Sacramento should definitely check this place out!
  • A very important part of California history. Every child hears about the CA gold rush. Here at Sutters Fort you can experience life as it was during the gold rush. This was actually a FORT and you can see the incredibly thick walls with gun turrets. I recommend all children come here to reinforce their schooling. This was very important to CA history. Young and old will learn something.
  • A bit overpriced for the hokey tour. But I learned that Sutter was a pretty shady character... Kind of weird that so much is named after him.
