Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park, Sacramento

4.3
#1 of 6 in Historic Sites in Sacramento
The site of the first European settlement in the region and resting place for many travelers who were headed west, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park recalls the pioneering spirit of the California Gold Rush's early years. Founded in 1839 by John Sutter, the fortified structure has since been restored and today is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wander the grounds and view the adobe-style architecture of the central building (the only original surviving structure), which is surrounded by thick walls, defensive towers, and other buildings. Stop by the museum to view items owned by early pioneers who sought aid from the fort, including some from the infamous Donner Party. You can also join a guided tour to learn more about the history of the short-lived settlement, the region, and its residents. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Sacramento holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • A journey through time into the 1800's Californians historic cattle rancher and European entrepreneurs of the old west of Fort Sutter. Lots of relics and interesting items to see. The staff presentations were fun for the kids as well as very educational. I enjoyed the tour very much! Would come back again for the kids enjoyment. It makes your imagination run through time thinking of life back then, what it must have been like!
  • This was a great day to learn more about California history. The docents are in period attire and eager to share their knowledge. They are passionate about the fort and it's history. Try and make it when the docents are there. Everyone had a great time and learned something at the same time. A big shout out to the docents for an excellent job.
  • An excellent place to drop in and experience California history. It’s easy to lose yourself and be transported back in time. The guides are super helpful and the setting is pleasant. Good gift shop, too.
  • If you know California history this is a must . almost every well know and not so well known pioneer spent some time here . If you don't know his history read up on John Sutter and you will really appreciate his pioneer fortitude and how much he accomplished and contributed, giving you have a better understanding of why this historic site is so significant. this is a great place for kids, also check out the Indian museum and turtle pond on the grounds.
  • Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park is very accessible to visitors. The location is not too far away from the freeway exit. Once you enter the park, you’ll see some interesting exhibit. There are days that the park has live demonstrations for the visitors to enjoy.
