#2 of 10 in Outdoors in Sacramento
Zoo / Aquarium Nature / Park
Visit the wildlife oasis and see and interact with animals from the four corners of the world at Sacramento Zoo. From red pandas to penguins, the modest-sized zoo is home to a variety of animals, all living in spacious habitats. The zoo layout caters to its youngest visitors, allowing kids to go easily from one habitat to the other and ensuring children in strollers have a good view of the animals. For a small fee you can take part in giraffe feeding, which takes place twice a day and is one of the zoo's main attractions. If you get tired of walking you can hop on a train, or take a break by having a snack or visiting the gift shop. Plan your visit to Sacramento Zoo and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Sacramento vacation trip planner.

  • I enjoy viewing exotic animals and a trip to the zoo has filled that desire to a point. I say to a point because the best place for exotic is of course in their own natural habitat. The Sacramento Zoo...  more »

  • The Zoo is smaller than the Oakland and S.F Zoo. The only problem I had was the parking. The Zoo doesn't technically have it's own parking so you're left to park on the roads. I had to park where the homes were so kind of a walk. Either than that it was ok. My kids had fun so I cannot ask for more. The prices for the admissions were decent, the gift shop was cool and luckily the majority of the animals were active so that was a first. They have a train ride that rides around the Zoo for kids and adults. Please make sure you don't go on a day when it's raining because they will close the train down until the staff feels it's safe enough and your kids will hate you.
  • Beautiful Zoo! Little small, compared to Kansas City Zoo, where I am from, but love the zoo. Animal exhibits are well laid out. Animals look very healthy and happy. People that work there look like they like there jobs.
  • The zoo is amazing! So many unique fun exhibits. A must is feeding the giraffes! Kids and adults love it. I am writing the review, however, to suggest NOT eating at Reilly's reserve. We have eaten here twice now and both times service was slow and not very good AND the food is horrible. We like the idea of a table service restaurant to rest and enjoy our time. We were hoping we had just caught them on a bad day the first time, but no. View is OK. Food is also over priced. We've tried sandwiches, apps and salads. All have been poor quality food, cold and we were even served stale bread this last time.
  • It's the only zoo in Sacramento. It's fairly small, but still a great place to enjoy a few hours with the family. They have a good variety of animals to see, including an area dedicated to reptiles. Membership cost is reasonable as well, if you plan on visiting a few times over a year.
  • Zoo is on the small size. That can be a good thing if you have little ones. You can get around it in an hour or stretch it out for a couple. The garden was fun for kids. There are watering cans there so the kids can water.

Where to stay in Sacramento

Sacramento boasts a number of hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts that vary in price and character. Units downtown provide easy access to the majority of the city's attractions and nightlife but tend to be more expensive. If you are flying in or out of the city, consider one of the hotels near Sacramento International Airport for convenience. Vacation rentals are ideal if you are planning a longer stay in the city, with many located in quieter residential neighborhoods.
