Ashfall Fossil Beds is a national natural landmark with complete skeletons left in place for viewing. The research center and active dig site allows visitors to watch as paleontologists unearth barrel-bodied rhinos and other animals entombed by ash from a supervolcanic eruption 12 million years ago. There is no other place like it in the world.

  • Worth the drive! You won't believe what your eyes are seeing in Northeast Nebraska! A fossil bed w rhinos dating million plus years old.. Hands on activities for kids. Love it!
  • This is a place where you step back about 12.0 million years. I have been to other digs and none have the amount of total remains of animals from that time. When you are in the area you owe it to your...  read more »

  • Absolutely educational.. Love fossils and this is the best!!! Watched a young man cleaning up a skull and he gave wonderful intersting imfo. Im bringing my fossil nuts daughter here!!!!!
  • Our family really enjoyed this adventure. We traveled from Lincoln on Memorial Day 2016. I had been wanting to come for years and finally decided I was going. My husband wasn't too thrilled and my daughter (14)thought it would be cool until she heard how long the trip was. Well, fortunately everyone loved it! I was really cool to see how dinosaurs and now extinct animals lived here in Nebraska. How glaciers were actually here at one time, and how 10" of volcanic ash could travel from Mt. St. Helens to here way back when. It is only $5 pp to get in and a park permit or purchase a day one for $5. It is well worth it!
  • This is a great way to spend a few hours. You can check out the fossils, have a talk with an intern digging through the ash, or go on one of the several small trails. No matter what, you'll have a fun day at Ashfall Fossil Beds.
  • One of the best kept secrets in the United States of America is the Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park! Plan on 3-4 hours minimum. It has been designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service. We stayed at Stubby's Motel in Creighton, NE and ate at Elaine's Bar and Grill in Winnetoon, NE. We bought breakfast to go and subs for lunch as well as ice for the cooler at the AmPride CMart on Main Street Creighton because the park has no food and just water for drinks.
  • Very cool. Great place to visit with family. Our kids loved it.
