Route 66 (officially U.S. Route 66) is a former American road that linked Chicago (Illinois) in Santa Monica (California), between the years 1926 and 1985 to the United States. Its length has varied through the years and the changes of its layout. Before 1937 (where Route 66 stopped serving the city of Santa Fe, to the New Mexico) she was 2 448 miles (3 945 km) 2. Route 66 through three time zones time and 8 States (from East to West: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California). It was the first transcontinental road asphalt in America. The Americans call The Mother Road or Main Street USA. During the Great Depression of the 1930s and the wave of the Dust Bowl drought, is by the Route 66 farmers looking for a job moved to California. This phenomenon of "pool of dust" occurred at the time of the Great Depression. The region encompasses the "tails of Pan" (panhandles) of Oklahoma and Texas, as well as parts of Kansas, Colorado and the New Mexico on their borders. These territories of the Midwest, where the rains are infrequent, light soils and strong winds, form a devastating phenomena-friendly mix. When the region, agricultural heart of the United States, is ravaged by drought from 1934 to 1937, the winds carry the topsoil layer, causing of horrific dust storms, black blizzards (black blizzards), which destroy crops and pastures and bury houses and farm equipment. Thousands of farmers are thrown on the road, to the West. It is believed that about three million people thus migrated, including California, on Route 66, at the time the main East-West axis of the country. The most affected farmers are from Oklahoma (about 15% of the population of the State) and Arkansas. Respectively, they are nicknamed the Okies and Arkies the. John Steinbeck, in his novel the grapes of wrath, describes this period of American history. Route 66 was officially decommissioned on 27 June 19853. If she hasn't officially exist, it retains a mythical character and is probably the best known of American roads. Since the beginning of the 1990s, movements are created to ensure its preservation, and initiatives to develop tourism are more numerous. The road is thus again signposted in several places known as Historic Route 66. On the stretch of Route 66 that we have travelled, we hardly find him an immediate charm, and the villages passed make us understand how the modern highway has done harm to the region. A lot of shops that sell the road 66 but the myth has lost feathers in the case. She has inspired several songs, which (Get your kicks on) Route 66, including by Chuck Berry, and appears in many films.
