Maidu Museum & Historic Site, Roseville

4.5
#6 of 9 in Things to do in Roseville
The Maidu Museum & Historic Site offers visitors a unique combination of a world class museum and 6,000 year old Native Californian Indian village site. Graced by oak trees and bordered on the south by a branch of Linda Creek/Strap Ravine, the nature area offers a loop trail that takes you past ancient petroglyphs and hundreds of bedrock mortars for grinding acorns; evidence of Nisenan / Southern Maidu occupation of the site for thousands of years.

Inside the museum you'll find exhibits portraying the Maidu way of life as well as an art gallery featuring the talents of contemporary Native Americans. The Museum Gift Shop offers a wide selection of books about Native Californians, handmade jewelry, minerals, arrowheads, other cultural artifacts and many nature-related items.

  • This field trip with my granddaughter's 4th grade class was very informative and educational. The indigenous people's game and song they learned were age-appropriate and fun! The guide shared interesting facts and history inside the museum and outside, on the walk.
  • I chaperoned my daughter's school field trip here and is was really an awesome experience. We learned a ton. Walking the trails with the tour guide and experiencing how the Maidu lived right in our own backyard was very cool. Will definitely come back with the rest of my family so they can experience and learn about the Maidu Indians as well.
  • It was ok. I wasn't impressed. There is barely anything to do and the tour guide needs to be more interesting. I wish cameras were allowed! Also, the nature trail is very short and you can barely see the rock carvings. It needs more activities and space. I went on a field trip today there, not impressed.
  • Awesome museum and site. The tour was really informative.
  • Loved it! Small but informative.
