P. H. Hoeft State Park is located north of Rogers City, Michigan, on US 23 in Presque Isle County.HistoryPaul H. Hoeft was a local Rogers City lumberman, who acquired parcels of land in the area in the early 1900s. In 1920, soon after the establishment of the Michigan state park system, Hoeft offered to donate land to the state to create a park. At the time the state was also upgrading the main trunkline running through Rogers City - now US23 - and area tourism was on an upswing. Paul H. Hoeft State Park was formally established in 1921. A picnic area was immediately constructed, and substantial development came in 1923 after the US23 improvements were completed. An early campsite loop was developed, and a log and stone bathhouse was constructed. A concrete bandstand and a play area were constructed in 1926-27, and in 1929 a two-story frame house was built for the park manager. In 1933, additional development was undertaken as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps. CCC workers constructed foot trails, a gravel road, and a garage/workshop. In addition, they implemented an extensive reforestation project, planting over 50,000 seedlings. Over the next few years, the park entrance was moved and a new parking lot was constructed. In addition, water and sewer services were connected to the campground and day use areas. In 1937, the earlier bathhouse was demolished and work began on a new replacement, designed by architect Ralph B. Herrick.Further infrastructure improvements were made in the 1940s and 1950s, including a new water system, electrical work, and a laundry building. In the 1960s a new campground loop was added, and in the 1970s the campground roads were paved.

  • This is one of the best campgrounds in Michigan in my opinion. The waters of Lake Huron are crystal clear and you can expect light crowds. I would recommend sites, 29, 31,32. Site 32 is th gem. All th...  more »

  • We were off season, but it looks like a good place to camp. Electrical infrastructure is dated, but 20A users do okay. Nice toilet and shower buildings are well cared for and clean. Kids play area looks fun. Easy beach access. Obviously park has a fan club of those who "love " the place. It's an old venerable park loved by generations. We will return.
  • Did you know that Hoeft is just a place in Michigan and not actually a state? We thought we had stumbled onto a previously unknown 51st state and were excited to participate in homesteading and probably getting to know the natives and later getting rich by selling our farm to the railroad and then losing it all speculating on timber. But no. It was just a nice place to visit.
  • The rangers and staff here are AMAZING. We just had our wedding here at the Sunrise Pavilion and everyone was so pleasant and helpful. The pavilion here is beautiful, I would highly recommend checking it out. We also had the group site rented out which was huge and fit everyone comfortably. As a tent camper, the regular campsites are okay. Definitely been to better sites, but sufficient. Bathrooms are kind of dirty, but the staff is always working hard on them to keep them clean so it must just be busy. Overall a great weekend at Hoeft.
  • Beautiful beach and nice park. We will definitely revisit . clean and quiet
  • Family loved it. Beach was small but water was up in the lake this year. Amazing star gazing over the lake.
