Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester

4.7
#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in Rochester
Mount Hope, as the nation’s first municipally-owned Victorian cemetery, is one of the most remarkable cemeteries in America. The dramatic topography formed by glacial forces provides its most striking character-giving features. The thousands of monuments and other man-made structures added since its opening in 1838 has resulted in a stunning 196-acre outdoor museum. Today, Mount Hope continues to be an active cemetery as well as Rochester’s most unique and valued green space.

Four seasons of splendor offers a peaceful oasis to Mount Hope visitors, as well as to the 350,000 permanent residents, who include Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. A sought after destination for photographers and history buffs, Mount Hope is listed in the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places as part of the local Mt. Hope/Highland Preservation District and the National Parks Services’ National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

  • The Mt. Hope Cemetery is a must-see for any visitor to the Rochester area. Cemeteries especially old ones are unique in providing history and great photo opportunities. I enjoyed exploring this great facility and I had no trouble locating its two famous residents Susan B Anthony and Frederick Douglass. The short drive up the cobblestone road was a little hair raising for me though. I didn't want to mess up my new car's transmission. When you visit the Mt. Hope Cemetery don't forget your camera.
  • We visited to pay our respects to two inspiring and courageous people who are buried here - Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Their burial sites are modest they way they should be. The pinpointed locations here on Google Maps are pretty accurate so it wasn't very difficult for us finding them. They are a bit of a distance from each other so we got some good cardio workout in the process. You can also drive slowly along the cemetery road and park temporarily near the burial sites. Don't miss out on the statue of Mr. Douglass by the cemetery entrance.
  • Incredible experience, there is so much to learn. We had a wonderful tour and can't wait to go back again.
  • Paved roads and cobblestone trails cover almost 200 acres of hilly and flat terrain, making it a wonderfully interesting place to walk year-round. Two entrances from Mt. Hope Ave, the northern one enters the oldest part of the cemetery, but the southern entrance is the main gate where you can stop in the office to pick up a map if you're looking for specific graves (Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass among he most well-known). The third entrance, off Elmwood Ave. opposite Strong Hospital, enters the flat & newer section. If you're not in a rush, a slow amble through will reward you with peaceful vistas & new discoveries of wildlife & carved memorials. There are almost always walkers, runners, and grounds crew about, giving it a livelier atmosphere than you might expect!
  • This is a must-see if you're in Rochester. It's an old cemetery. It's hilly, some of the tombstones are crooked or leaning over, and I appreciate that they leave the grass, weeds, and wildflowers a bit unkempt. It really adds to the mystic and sense of time the cemetery has. I didn't find the map they gave us particularly helpful because the locations weren't exactly right, and while it gave a list of significant people, the map didn't give information about who all the people were. But, there are tons of resources online and apps you can use that will give you better context. This is a true gem. Don't miss it!
