  • Not only an amazing collection of trains, but also a nice collection of old cars as well as some interesting displays on flying. We visited on Train Lovers Day and there were also Diesel Train rides a...  more »
  • I am a big train enthusiast myself, but my husband isn't. I dragged him along and he actually really enjoyed it  more »
  • We accidentally went during a miniature train show, which was fun but the museum was soooo crowded and full of little kids that it was a little hard to see everything. Great collections, though!  more »

  • I'm a fan of the Nickel Plate Road 765, out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. By following them online I eventually discovered the fire up 611 campaign. Earlier this summer we took a trip to South Carolina, and considered stopping at Mt Airy, NC on the way back to Indiana. We decided to go straight home and plan a long weekend trip to NC, so I added Roanoke to the itinerary to come here! This was the primary destination for our two-night stay here in town, so every penny spent in Roanoke was directly because of this museum. Originally 611 was going to return home earlier in the week, but after the trip was planned they extended the 611's stay in NC a week, and after we were going to be gone. I'm slightly disappointed I didn't get a chance to see the 611 with my own eyeballs, but this museum is very well done. Everything that sparks my interests are all under one roof, I could barely handle it. I did get to see 1256 on loan from St. Louis so that was a plus. And 1218 also! Even without 611 there was plenty of rolling stock to check out. I seriously loved every inch of this place and could come back and take just as long looking around. Thanks for putting together a fabulous museum!
  • Very cool place for us oldies and our young grandchildren. I was actually bummed that we hadn't discovered it a decade ago!
  • There were so many trains and old cars. My 4 year old nephew loved it when we went three months ago. With the 2 hour drive!
  • Fascinating exhibits on air travel, rail, and automobiles. Unfortunately a small part of the exhibits were closed. The scale and size of the locomotives outside are impressive and they are very well kept. Good discount for AAA members!
  • One of the better Museum that I visited in the Roanoke Valley. Your kids will love the trains they really impress you with how large they are.
