City Market, Roanoke

3.8
The City Market Building in Downtown Roanoke, VA is an iconic historical building that has housed decades of entrepreneurs. Originally constructed as a meat market, the City Market Building has transformed with the times, but has always remained a center for economic activity and a hub for Downtown business.

Most recently the City Market Building underwent a $7.9 million renovation, closing in 2010 and reopening in September 2011. Through the renovation the City of Roanoke sought to reinvigorate the aging building while maintaining her historical traits and eclectic appeal. The first floor and mezzanines received a facelift, with new kitchens, lighting, and exposed brick walls. The renovation reflects the meat market era with the clean white tiles and concrete floors, while a bright, open, airy central garden in the middle of the first floor provides a welcoming eating environment for dining patrons.

The third floor of the City Market Building houses a premier Downtown event venue, Charter Hall. Capable of holding up to 500 people standing and 250 people seated, Charter Hall is a well appointed room with sophisticated styling and state of the art amenities.

Call the City Market Building office at 540-986-5992 for questions about renting Charter Hall.

  • Variety of food is good. Prices are very resonable. Generally is not over crowded so no long waits, however lunch is a little busy. Quality of food is good.  more »

  • There are lots of nice restaurants here. Not going to talk about the individual restaurants here because this is not the spot for them to be this is for the market building. There is also a big area for seating here. They also help host lots of festivals by having things set up inside.
  • Everyone was super nice and helpful. Everything was very clean and tidy. The food was just "ok." The sweet tea was horrible, though!
  • Since the building's major interior renovation several years ago, the interior has lost its character and charm. For those looking for a more contemporary interior this is your place. Essentially equivalent to a mall food court with central area seating and the food kiosks on the perimeter. A few are empty. No chains. Basic fares such as sandwiches, Chinese, a gyro/kebab place, hot dogs, etc.
  • Great place to eat lunch downtown. There are a variety of restaurants within the building and it is easy to find. One of my favorite spots with a group.
  • Alway good for a quick bite to eat or a place to get out of the weather!

Where to stay in Roanoke

The most architecturally interesting accommodations in Roanoke cluster in the historical center, south of Gainsboro district. The long-established hotels here have been joined by the more modern, purpose-built establishments. Look to the north and in the residential areas for more modest inns and guesthouses, and around the airport for some contemporary business-style hotels.
