Two former presidents are buried in Hollywood Cemetery. The remains of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, are contained in a Gothic Revival-style tomb nicknamed The Birdcage. A monument to the tenth president, John Tyler, stands near to Monroe's in Presidents Circle. Other must-sees include the 27 m (90 ft) pyramid that stands as a memorial to the 18,000 Confederate soldiers buried here; the grave of Jefferson Davis, the only Confederate president, marked by a lifesize statue; and the iron dog that stands watch over the grave of a little girl who died in 1862. Established in 1849, the cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. From Palmer Chapel Mausoleum or Davis circle, you'll find the best views of the mighty James River. • We visited early in the morning when the dew was still on the grass and the trees. It was stunningly beautiful, peaceful and sobering. It is well maintained and a great source of history.  more »

  • We were here to see the final resting place of US Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis. It was cold during our visit so we abandoned our initial plan of walking and just drove around, using the faint blue line painted on the side of the road as guide. There are no admission or parking fees. We parked temporarily near Davis's tomb. His is quite prominent with a statue and was thus easy to locate. We missed President's Circle, site of both Monroe and Tyler's mausoleums, on our first drive by and had to ask for directions. When we finally found it, we parked nearby and stayed for 20 minutes. A short distance from there is a scenic lookout with fantastic views of downtown Richmond and James River. Our entire visit lasted 40 minutes. This was a good experience overall and we'd recommend it to anyone visiting Richmond.
  • Hollywood Cemetery is a beautiful, historical cemetery with the first burial in 1848. The back portion of the cemetery is the confederate memorial and along river you'll find the graves of Presidents Monroe and Tyler, and Jefferson Davis. The cemetery is a great place to walk with some of the most beautiful tombstones you'll ever see. Be sure to look out for the puppy statues!
  • Must see when visiting Richmond. Especially in the spring. Beautiful grounds where you can walk or drive. There is an enormous amount of history here. If you are a Civil War buff, check out the final resting place of President Davis and General Pickett among others.
  • A lot of people don't seem to know this, but Hollywood is a fully functioning cemetery, and they are amazing. When my brother died completely unexpectedly at only 35 years old last year, Woody and Mabel in the front office took such incredible care of me and my family. Woody even managed to make us smile on the day my brother died, the same day we picked his plot, which was the truly the worst, most devastating day of my life. And everything was perfect, everything was just the way we discussed it should be, on the day we buried him. I commend Woody & Mabel, and Hollywood, for being such a spot of beautiful in the face of tragedy. Thank you for taking such amazing care of us and for continuing to take such wonderful care of my brother.
  • I absolutely adore this place! All the beautiful flags and monuments are out of this world! Salute!
