Grand Sierra Resort is a hotel and casino located approximately three miles east of Downtown Reno, Nevada. The hotel has 1,990 guest rooms and suites, 10 restaurants, including two by celebrity chef Charlie Palmer and a casino with 63584sqft of space. The hotel also has a shopping center, wedding chapel, pool, convention center, 50-lane bowling alley, movie theater, a Race & Sports Book, nightclubs including LEX a 25,000 sq ft venue with a swimming pool, lake golf driving range, a two screen cinema and an RV park. It is owned and operated by Southern California based investment group headed by The Meruelo Group.HistoryIn 1975, officials from the Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Company began to scout out Reno locations for their proposed high rise hotel-casino they wanted to model after their very high profile Las Vegas casino, the MGM Grand. Following a deal with and approval from the City Council, MGM purchased land at the intersection of Mill and 2nd Streets, at that time a gravel pit. The Summer of 1976 saw construction begin on the 26 story, 1,015 room property that would then be one of the largest in the world. After two years of fast tracked construction, the building opened with fanfare, fashion and media attention on May 3, 1978.

  • This is a Very busy casino-hotel. Smoking in the lobby was a BIG turn off for us. Their staff needs training, as they didn't know anything about the event we were attending, which was a feature attrac...  more »
  • Holly was very accommodating in helping us with our last minute group reservation for the bowling alley. It definitely made our experience all the more enjoyable.  more »
  • The resort has everything and more for the family. Only downside is there is nothing near it, but this does mean that there aren't homeless people loitering in the foyer - a $10 uber gets you into tow...  more »

  • I partook in the buffet and the poker room. Both were excellent experiences. I mean, if you don't count lasting two hours in the tournament to get beat by a three outer...but that's poker for ya. The staff and fellow players were all congenial. The buffet had same savory selections and a very attentive staff. It was a seafood day and I don't usually get excited over that like my Sweetie does, but I found three different fish dishes that literally had me thinking about them hours later. Sweetie didn't even bother with crab legs she was having so much fun with the fish. I'd tell you about desserts but I don't want to contribute to your delinquency. (ssssshhhhh! Sweet salted caramel in chocolate sauce)
  • I had a great experience at this hotel. Room was good and service was OUTSTANDING! I was on a business trip and lost a very sentimental necklace, I didn't realize it until I got home, three states later, that I lost it. I called the hotel and my first call was after hours and they directed me, after tons of help, with a ticket number, to the main lost and found associates. I left a message and was called back immediately. They found my very precious necklace, and mailed it out free of charge to me the next day. Customer service is a very challenging business to be in and the amount of attention and patience they showed me was unforgettable. This team showed the best definition of customer service that i have ever experienced to date! I will forever book my Reno trips with them.
  • This is a really nice hotel casino. I've stayed here multiple times and the service is great, as is the restaurants. I've also done pretty good at the slot machines as well. If you play them try the twice the money double hit progressive in the non smoking area. I did really good on it. Only complaint I have is the pillows in the room are totally flat but I didn't give them less stars because every hotel I've stayed at pretty much all have flat pillows... Definitely recommend gsr =)
  • Front desk "upgraded" my reservation from 2 two queen rooms to 2 two king rooms. Unfortunately these rooms were under construction, dirty, poorly lit and above the pool area that was under construction all night. Sheets were dirty, the runner was stained and smelled like sweaty feet, the towels in the bathroom had someone hair all over them as if the had not been replaced from the previous guests stay, and none of the guest services on the TV worked. Food was missing from my order made with room service. The arcade area for children is not what the website advertises it to be. Multiple games don't work, the go carts and mini golf are not easily accessible (their outside on the other side of the valet parking lot) The bowling alley is also under construction like the pool area. It is not well kept as the balls are extremely oily and the program for score keeping randomly switched our lane amid the game in error. The cafe breakfast menu is very limited, likely to sway guests to go to the buffet for 25 a person for adequate options. Security officers used pepper spray inside the hall for the concert to remove unruly guests, leaving everyone else in the hall including children unable remain in the hall for the concert. Highly do not recommend staying at GSR.
  • We love GSR they have the best place to stay. There is a lot of stuff to do there. Can watch a movie go hit some golf balls into the water. Go bowling all in the same hotel. The staff are so friendly. Great bars great happy hours! Love the rooms! Stop in and have a great time!

Where to stay in Reno

Since Reno's casinos want you to save your money for the blackjack table, they offer some very reasonable rates on their rooms. Even a stay in one of the amenity-rich resort- or spa-style casinos downtown can be quite affordable. Plenty of hotels, motels, inns, and lodges are scattered throughout town, though most lie in and around downtown. If you're planning to ski in the mountains west of town, staying near Interstate 80 can save a couple minutes on your commute. Accommodations in Reno generally remain easy to find, but the days before and after the popular Burning Man festival in the desert east of the city tend to see a bump in visitors. Consider booking ahead if your visit coincides with the festival.
