Sundial Bridge, Redding

(1,000+ reviews on the web)
Bridge
Stretching 213 m (700 ft) across the Sacramento River, Sundial Bridge gives visitors easy access to a nearby park and also claims to be one of the world's largest timepieces of its kind. The bridge's 66 m (217 ft) tall tower acts as the "hand" of the sundial, holding the structure entirely above the water, and you'll find that markers on a nearby plaza provide the clock on which the shadow falls. Marvel at the bridge's design, which incorporates decorative glass, tiles, and translucent structure pieces that make the profile extremely distinctive. • Easy access and parking, casual walk and great scenery. Take a 10 minute stroll or stay for hours and walk on the trails. Close to Turtle Bay and the Arboretum. Cool on a hot day.  more »
  • Way cool but I think they spent too much money for a walking bridge!!!! It's definitely worth going to check out if you're in the area!  more »
  • We went here while in Redding on business. It was a nice walk and the arboretum next to it made for a nice Spring walk.  more »

  • Beautiful scenery. You can see Mt Lassen from the bridge. And there is a beautiful Arboretum..... just be careful for snakes. We saw 2 rattle snakes, one was a baby and the other full grown, crossed the path about 3 feet in front of us.
  • My family and I did enjoy our walk. We came at dusk because we wanted to see the lights come on. It was sorts cool. I had hoped maybe the glass would be clear but it had a frosted finish. Otherwise it did have some beautiful scenic views and a beautiful walking park.
  • Bridge surface is very slick. Nearly every time it's wet someone slips or a bike wrecks. The glass is so hot on sunny days that it will burn your dogs feet. When glass is replaced, they place a metal cage over the broken piece. The cage is low to the ground, not marked and is nearly impossible to see at night. I've tripped and fallen, nearly breaking my arm. I'm not sure how this bridge passed permitting code considering how the county and city abuse businesses and home owners with regulations. The bridge is poorly lit at night. Lights are under the surface shinning up providing little to no help to pedestrians. The path on the other side is lite with lights shinning sideways. This bridge is not built to be functional or safe. Lighting needs to be moved above, shinning downward onto the walking surface. The surface needs to be replaced with a walkable surface that stays cooler in the summer heat. The design doesn't compliment northern California's history, values or style. It is out of place. It does provide a walkway to the other side of the river.
  • The surface might be a little slick in the rain but its beautiful and well kept place. Everywhere there are riding bikes and whole families enjoying this beautiful location. I would recommend it to any lovers of architecture and all lovers of family friendly experiences.
  • The sundial bridge and surrounding trials are the perfect place to spend a few hours outdoors getting some exercise. The kids loved locating turtles in the turtle pond. Always remember to walk with a buddy or even a four legged friend.
