Dinosaur Park, Rapid City

3.6
Showcasing seven lifesize dinosaurs overlooking the city, Dinosaur Park has been catching eyes since 1936. Initially gray, these iron and concrete giants were colored bright green and white in the 1950s. Most of them are meant to reflect fossils found in the area. See the models of Apatosaurus, Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Anatotitan, Protoceratops, and a nondinosaur Dimetrodon--an ancestor of dinosaurs. These all look somewhat goofy by today's standards, and are sometimes described as being from the Flintstones' world. Take in the 160 km (100 mi) view of the surrounding area from this overlook above the town. Arrange to visit Dinosaur Park and other attractions in Rapid City using our Rapid City trip site .

  • If it were up to me, I would give this a fair rating. However, my ten year old granddaughter loved it. She climbed the stairs like a mountain goat and had a ball climbing on the dinosaurs. I huffed an...  more »
  • Great learning and hands on play place. Kids can climb all over the statues and it has an amazing view!!  more »
  • Average would be a compliment to this city attraction. Steps too steep, not handicap accessible, in need of repair. For families with young children ONLY! Great view of Rapid City but unless changes a...  more »

  • My favorite Rapid City Trolley stop. We can easily spend the full hour in the gift shop. The ice cream and snacks here are decently priced. To get to the actual top of Dinosaur Park there is quite a number of steps and is good for health conscious people to climb even if it's just for the exercise. Once you're up there you get an incredible view of Rapid City. A lot of kids enjoy climbing on the dinosaurs. This is a great FREE attraction for families.
  • We were on a family road trip cross country and decided to stop here after Mount Rushmore to stretch our legs and let our toddler run around for a bit. She's at the age where she loves dinosaurs and she certainly enjoyed seeing and climbing on these huge statues! Also a good view of the city. There are a lot of stairs as people have mentioned and the dinosaurs are old school with chipped paint on some. The car ride to the top took a lot longer and was more winding than expected. However, we had fun and think it was worth it!
  • Awesome experience but be prepared to walk up a lot of steps to get to the top. It's dinosaurs plain and simple. There is no swings, ect but the kids love the dinosaurs! The gift shop is amazing with clean bathrooms, appropriately prices souvenirs and great I expensive food and ice cream!
  • Very fun park! Had a great hike up and down the hill with great views. The little one enjoyed running on the dinosaurs to!
  • It was a fun stopover on our way through SD. It didn't cost anything to go see the dinosaurs and take pictures with them. They had great deals on hotdogs and other food at the gift shop as well as good souvenirs.

In Rapid City you'll find a variety of hotels and motels, but you can expect their rates to vary considerably depending on the season. Those located downtown provide easy walking access to some of the area's most popular restaurants and bars. Visitors wanting to explore the iconic Mount Rushmore or Custer State Park attractions may prefer the convenience of a hotel along Interstate 90. If you want a scenic escape, look for a bed and breakfast, campsite, or cabin in the surrounding Black Hills National Forest.
