Dinosaur Park, Rapid City

Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
3.6/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web
Showcasing seven lifesize dinosaurs overlooking the city, Dinosaur Park has been catching eyes since 1936. Initially gray, these iron and concrete giants were colored bright green and white in the 1950s. Most of them are meant to reflect fossils found in the area. See the models of Apatosaurus, Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Anatotitan, Protoceratops, and a nondinosaur Dimetrodon--an ancestor of dinosaurs. These all look somewhat goofy by today's standards, and are sometimes described as being from the Flintstones' world. Take in the 160 km (100 mi) view of the surrounding area from this overlook above the town. • Great place to go for an amazing view of Rapid City! On a good day you can see for miles and miles. We like to go here to sit and watch the day go by.
  • Not the most exciting park. The Dinos need to be repainted. There are a lot of stairs to climb. The drive is also very twisty and steep.
  • Went to this park for something quick to do. Brochure said snack area open in October and get free popcorn. It was closed for the season when we got there. The park. Sit high above the city in skyline...  read more »
  • A memorable experience and fun for kids. I just found a photo of me and my 3 brothers on the dinosaurs in 1954. I remember it still and the experience made me love dinosaurs. I combined those photos with recent ones of me at Dinosaur National Monument in Utah into a book I am making for my granddaughter who also loves dinosaurs. It may be corny and not scientifically valid, but take the kids there. They will have fun and keep the memories like I did.
  • Ugh. Large RVs and trailers beware! We owned a delivery service w 30' trailers, so when it comes to handling trailers, my fiancĂ©e is good. Very good. There was not a single place he felt comfortable trying to park here, pull in, back in, or turn around with our 25' gooseneck. The views from the window looked great but we simply couldn't do it. If you are in a car I'm sure it's great. We had just missed the trolley, and didn't want to wait an hour for the next one. Not with a 1 & 3 yr old anyways.
  • It's free! View is beautiful in the late evening. Sculptures are neat but no lights by them. A lot of steps. But worth going up.
  • Great visit for kids, great views. Gift shop is very reasonable. Worth a one time visit. Takes about 1.5 hours out of your day.
  • One of the best places to visit when going to Rapid City, The dinosaurs are amazing, in an old 1930s dinosaur position which is now incorrect just gives the place a nice warm early Old western feel. The gift shop had amazing items not only about dinosaurs but also rocks, modern day animals, and the badlands. I buy way to much stuff from this place, and my collection of Dinosaur stuff is like 30 percent items I bought at Dinosaur hill, and my collection takes up a whole room. The parks statues include Apatosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, and Edmontosaurus, and you count the 2 small statues of Protoceratops and Dimetrodon next to the Gift shop that makes 7 statues in all, each one has a plake that tells you what they are what they actually were in life and it is amazing, you have a 100 mile view from the hill it is located on, the ice cream is great and the food tasty, the only complaint I have about this place is that you, the reader are not there right now! Get going! The dinosaurs are free!
