Chapel In the Hills, Rapid City

Church Architectural Building
Instead of traveling to Scandinavia to admire the wonders of wooden architecture, visit Chapel In the Hills and take a trip back in time. The Lutheran church is an exact replica of the medieval Borgund stave church in Norway, and its architecture and surrounding nature perfectly conjure a tranquil Norwegian atmosphere. Next to the church is a small museum housed in an authentic 19th-century log cabin erected by a Norwegian prospector who settled here. Admire the artifacts and use the opportunity to learn how traditional Scandinavian runestones are carved. Admission is free. • Enjoyed our visit. The ladies who work there were very friendly and told us the history of the chapel which is an exact replica of the Borgund Church in Norway  more »
  • Cute little chapel with an interesting history. My son is convinced it's haunted because when you walk in, a recording starts playing to tell you about its history.  more »
  • You have to be looking for this chapel. There is a well dated sign off of the main highway but it is easily overlooked. The chapel is wooden and made by Norwegian immigrants. Definitely bring your cam...  more »

  • Beautiful and historic. We saw multiple deer and rabbits right by the chapel. Cute gift store with lots of neat items.
  • Beautiful replica, great way to see a full size stave church if you don't have the opportunity to get to Norway!
  • It was a beautiful and historic treat. Definitely worth the short drive.
  • Very beautiful, peaceful and well maintained.
  • If you visit the Black Hills, this is a must see. This is an authentic building. The only other place in the world you'll probably be able to see another building like this is in Scandinavia. The Black Hills of SD were settled by many Scandinavians and they graced this area with this incredible structure.
