The Rhode Island State House, the capitol of the state of Rhode Island, is located at 900 Smith Street just below the crest of Smith Hill, on the border of downtown in Providence. It is a neoclassical building designed by McKim, Mead & White which features the fourth largest structural-stone dome in the world, topped by a gilded statue of "The Independent Man", representing freedom and independence. The building houses the Rhode Island General Assembly – the state House of Representatives is located in the west wing, and the Senate in the east – and the offices of the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and general treasurer of Rhode Island. Other state offices are located in separate buildings on a campus just north of the State House.Plan your Rhode Island State House visit and explore what else you can see and do in Providence using our Providence online day trip planner.
The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Rhode Island State House reviews
Beautiful building and grounds filled with so much of the state's history. Always recommend taking a tour of the building, whether it be a guided tour as we had or self-guided.

This state house is a huge architectural marvel right in the heart of Providence downtown. Frankly I didn't expect it to be this huge. The place was spotless and very well maintained. It's very close to the downtown and is spotted from various places in downtown. Do visit!
They can’t offer guided tours due to COVID-19, but after you pass thru security they will give you a map in the library & you’re welcome to do a self guided tour. Plus they have an interactive tour on their website if you don’t want to drive there! They have one of 3 original portraits in existence of George Washington. The library is public if you’re a research kind of person! We were in Awe!
What a beautiful, historical and captivating place to be. We had a wonderful time exploring the capital building.
The surrounding area is beautiful. Shopping and restaurants are steps away. The capital building is all constructed with white marble. One of a few in the United States. I am glad that I had a chance to walk around and enjoyed Providence's downtown.
They never got back to me about the chained fire exits, emergency lighting problems and fire alarm problems at a school building. they NFPA makes it clear the fire alarm sound level must be at least 5db over maximum sound level, but the system is so quiet people can't hear it. They then showed up at my building after I said something about the chained exits at the school and on 8/19/21 falsified the fire inspection report of my building, to prove this I posted over 40 videos on YouTube called " RI State Fire Marshal office falsified fire inspection report of my building"
