Providence
The Renaissance City
Providence has undergone a major upgrade in recent years, transforming from a rough-around-the-edges industrial city into an epicenter of culture. Today you'll encounter a rich collection of museums and theaters coupled with tasty ethnic cuisine and energetic nightlife, plus a refurbished downtown area. Federal Hill, just west of downtown, remains one of the biggest draws for visitors due to its historical architecture, outstanding Italian restaurants, strong concentration of shops, and buzzing bars and clubs. The presence of colleges and universities adds a youthful exuberance. As the third-largest city in New England, Providence hosts plenty of special events, such as concerts and fairs. Where to stay in Providence
Most of the guest beds in Providence lie in and around downtown; this is the most convenient area to stay in during your visit. Right downtown you'll find a handful of large hotels from national chains. Rooms here can be pricey, but many offer sweeping views of Providence Harbor. Federal Hill features a few locally owned inns, bed and breakfasts, and small hotels in historical buildings. You'll find additional homey establishments around the State House just north of downtown and the College Hill area across the Providence River to the east. Avoid the South Providence area and East Providence across the Seekonk River.
