Chosen for the best zoo in the United States in 2009 by USA Travel Guide, Columbus Zoo hosts over 2.3 million visitors per year, and cares for more than 9,000 animals. For 15 years, it had been managed by Jack Hanna, the famous American zookeeper and TV personality. The zoo is divided into regions, where it houses animals from North America, the Polar Frontier, Asia, Africa, and Australia. It has aquariums, forests, and open plains. Take one of the tours to see what the zookeepers do, or hop on a train and ride around "North America". If you are interested in amusement rides, make sure to check it with the zoo about what is open on the day of your visit. I read an article a few years ago that said the Columbus zoo and San Diego zoo compete for top zoo in the country! Really? Ohio has the world's best roller coasters, and potentially zoo as well? So, we thought we'd look into a road trip from Fort Wayne, IN. Turned out that our local zoo membership was in the "reciprocal zoo" program, giving us a deep discount (half off I think?) at the gate in Columbus. Wow, are we glad we made the trip! This zoo is absolutely incredible! At 580 acres, this zoo delivers tons to see and do! It has over 7000 animals! There's an attached water park AND amusement park! Our kids especially loved touching the stingrays at Stingray Bay. One special note...we noticed immediately the special design and attention to detail with the animal habitats. They didn't at all seem inhumane or uncomfortable. The animals all seemed happy and natural. The engineering and research required for this must've been well planned. If you're planning a trip from out of town like we did, please take some extra time to research and plan all the available attractions, and budget as many in as you possibly can. This was the zoo experience of a lifetime. We can't wait until next time!
We visited the zoo recently for Wild Lights and we enjoyed the visit. They do a good job decorating everything you can imagine with lights. My favorite part was the light show at the pond that was synchronized with Christmas music. If you're going to see animals in the winter, don't expect to see very many. We were able to see koalas, elephants, tigers, and matetees though. Overall we thought it was a good display, but I'm not sure if we would go back again now that we've seen it once.
Kid friendly and family friendly. Would say most items inside are over priced. But great experience with animals during the summer! And the Zoo Lights are amazing! I️ especially love it when they coordinate the lights to the music around the lake! During the summer the cheetah run is spectacular, however to see the entire park I️ would plan a day and pack a lunch, each section takes 1-2 hours to fully walk through.
We had such a great time with the whole family. Make sure you go if you have the chance. My kids loved it it was so great. They have many many many memories that they will keep forever. It will always be a summer to remember. We have so many pictures of our great day there. It was so wonderful to see all the fish life and very educational. You get to pet all these small sharks.
We went during the Christmas time for the Christmas lights. The Christmas light were amazing. I never seen so many lights. It was nice to see zoo animals too and there's definitely a lot to do. My biggest complaint was the lack of traffic directing. We were in the parking lot for an hour and a half trying to leave. Same issue coming into the parking lot. Also some exhibits needed some more lighting to see the zoo animals. I think during normal hours and not during Christmas time the zoo would be more enjoyable. Just didn't have the best experience this time.
