#4 of 6 in Historic Sites in Portland
Evergreen Cemetery is a garden style cemetery in the Deering neighborhood of Portland, Maine, United States. With 239acre of land, it is the largest cemetery in the state. Established in 1855 in what was then Westbrook, the cemetery is home to one of the state's most impressive collections of funerary art. The 140acre historical portion of the cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
Evergreen Cemetery is located in the central portion of Deering, the large western section of Portland, on the west side of Stevens Avenue, a major north-south artery. The main areas of the cemetery are laid out in with winding curvilinear paths, typical of the rural cemetery movement popular in the 19th century, while later sections of the cemetery are typically (but not entirely) laid out in a more rectilinear fashion. A number of architecturally significant mausoleums are located in the cemetery, the most prominent of which are the Chisholm Tomb and the F.O.J. Smith Tomb; the latter is a small-scale Classical Revival replica of the Maison Carrée, a Roman temple in Nîmes, France.
The cemetery was established in 1855 in Saccarappa (Westbrook) and became the area's main cemetery after the Western Cemetery. The original parcel appears to have been about 45acre, which was repeatedly enlarged beginning about 1869. As of March 2011, only 110acre were used for cemetery-related activities. The cemetery holds the records for Forest City Cemetery in South Portland. In April 2014, it was announced the cemetery would add an additional 800 to 1,000 gravesites near the main entrance while also adding a columbarium, which will hold cremated remains above ground. An estimated 60,000 to 70,000 people are interred in the cemetery.

  • This 239-acre (97 ha) cemetery was serene and beautiful during peak fall foliage. Consecrated in 1854, it held more than 36,500 monuments on the 110 acres (45 ha) so far used for burials. It had mauso...  more »
  • Well designed with a lovely pond at the far end. It’s like the third oldest in the cut but by far the most secluded. There is also a lovely stone chapel available free for residents. Also has a collec...  more »

  • Great Location for Bird Watching! Dogs are NOT allowed off leash. I've been visiting this Cemetery for years now. The grounds keepers are very nice and look out for the visitors. The staff in the office are always nice and professional. In the Spring this place is loaded with many types of Warblers. During Spring through Fall this beautiful Victorian Cemetery is home to many types of Migratory Birds. Owls, Herons, Egrets, Hawks, Crows, many types of Ducks and song birds. Many small mammals live there as well. The grounds are always well kept and groomed. There are many tiers of this Cemetery and the rolling grassy hills have everything from simple graves all the way up to mausoleums. The winding narrow roads are fascinatingly inviting to the pond. You can see a wingless, headless angel. (there has to be a story there) and many ancient old growth trees. I love this place!
  • Good for bike riding and pretty scenic trails in the woods. Beautiful, classic Victorian style graves. A pond. Lots of walking trails also. The cemetery and neighborhood is a maze though so if you're biking/backpacking,make sure you have directions to backtrack if you need to. Extremely buggy. Load up on bug spray.Yuppy spray if you have any. You are in Portland after all.
  • A lot of history in this place .Good place for hiking and bike rides. Word of advice, be really careful when you walking around the stones some of them are from the 1800's and are really fragile.
  • Well maintained. Some groundskeepers go above and beyond here.
  • nice little cemetery for walking and biking-
