  • We loved driving through here, the lakes were spectacular. There are plenty of places to stop, take pictures and enjoy the scenery. It's a beautiful drive with lots of great hikes.  more »
  • The air was hazy due to fires nearby. On a clear day, it would be very pretty. However, most disturbing was the health of the fish we that we caught. Although we caught limits, every single fish was h...  more »

  • Hidden treasure; was there with my husband for close to 2 hours and had a blast... While the cost for parking is steep ($35 per car extra for larger vehicles) if you have your own sleds and bring your own food and drinks then its not that bad. If you don't have your own equipment, they do have some available to rent (not sure of the cost as I have my own). Highly Recommend Snow Boots; you'll be glad you had them when it comes to going up and down the hills. There were about 8 runs when I was there today, some just for the little ones.
  • Avid hiker/backpacker here. Trails are not marked very well, but the hiking is fairly easy for the first mile. After that, it becomes more of a rock scramble, especially if you want to see the falls. Bring plenty of water, don't wear shorts, wear STURDY hiking boots, waterproof recommended.
  • Camping there most of my life. Desolation Wilderness, The Rubicon, Granite Chief, Crystal Basin, the divides and the 3 forks of the American so close to Sacramento. Use can be heavy at times but I've never not been able to find an escape. If you are in to off roading the area has plenty of jeep trails that head off to somewhat remote area. If you are into backpacking you are lucky having Desolation Wilderness so close. Its one of the only places in the ENF that has gotten healthier in the 2o years..banned campfires (within the wilderness) Fishing has improved also. Crystal Basin (area north of hwy 50 and directly west of the Crystal Range) is the one if not the most heavily used section of the national Forest system. A lot of board feet roll out of there. The campgrounds tend to be full on the weekends by the 4 of July.
  • South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe in general, has been my home for over 25 years now. It is a tourist attraction for the most part. But in the winter it is known for it's beautiful Ski Resorts, and amazing ski slopes. The most well known ski slopes is Heavenly Valley. In the summer, you can still see snow capping the gorgeous peaks surrounding you. In the summer everything about Tahoe transforms. It's like coming out of hibernation. That's when you take advantage of the beautiful weather and go hiking, camping, wakeboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, just about anything you want, and it is just as beautiful, if not more beautiful in the summertime. People think that there's nothing to do in Lake Tahoe in the summer, but they are so wrong. For example, this is Meeks Bay, and there is a gorgeous hike that takes you along a small ridge of a mountain with a 300 foot drop off to left-hand side that leads to gorgeous, bright blue, deep, cold, glacier water. If you have never visited Tahoe, North or South, I would highly suggest taking the time to see the beauty that this small tourist attraction can provide.
  • It's nice, allot of trees and it is very pretty. Definitely would say it's better in summer (besides the dusty road), but definitely prettier in winter when there is snow or rain. Buuut it is quite difficult to drive out when it's snowy because it gets very slippery, so keep that in mind.
