Shane Confectionery, Philadelphia

4.4
#6 of 11 in Shopping in Philadelphia
Shane Confectionery is the oldest continuously-run confectionery in the United States, established in 1863. The Shane family took over the business in 1911, installing elaborately carved woodwork, stained glass and curved windows to showcase the chocolates and confections made onsite. Ninety-nine years later, in 2010, the business transitioned to the Berley Brothers who own the nearby Franklin Fountain and whom embarked on a meticulous restoration of the building and business. Candies continue to be made on-site, with an emphasis on locally-sourced ingredients, seasonal specialties and old-fashioned quality.

  • My partner and I stopped to take a chocolate in this little place called great: friendly staff (dressed in clothes really look that characteristic) and hot chocolate. My boyfriend took an average single origin chocolate (bitter enough) and I had a big house with marshmallows chocolate (made from them ... nothing to do with those bought in bags at the grocery store who know plastic). We paid $14: not cheap, but considering the prices around and the quality is!

  • This place is so cool, like you’ve stepped back in time. The factory tour is awesome, and the Halloween tour (tales from the candy crypt) was stellar. We had a lot of fun, and had a rough time choosin...  more »

  • I've never been to the store, but I received their turtles as a x-mas gift. They were hands down the best I ever had. First of all they are gigantic. I only ate one at a time. The caramel was gooey and delicious. The chocolate melted in my mouth.
  • This is a really nice place. Have a hot chocolate there and get some fudge.
  • An amazing little shop with a great staff. The hot chocolate in the back is awesome as well!
  • Wonderful old candy shop. The shop in one form or another dates to the Civil War. Great selection of chocolates and confections. If you are anywhere near Shane's you simply must stop in. Heads above the cold high end candy stores.
  • Great stop for dessert and don't forget Jefferson's nightcap. Chocolate in a cup so delicious.
