Shane Confectionery is the oldest continuously-run confectionery in the United States, established in 1863. The Shane family took over the business in 1911, installing elaborately carved woodwork, stained glass and curved windows to showcase the chocolates and confections made onsite. Ninety-nine years later, in 2010, the business transitioned to the Berley Brothers who own the nearby Franklin Fountain and whom embarked on a meticulous restoration of the building and business. Candies continue to be made on-site, with an emphasis on locally-sourced ingredients, seasonal specialties and old-fashioned quality.

Where to stay in Philadelphia

Most of Philadelphia's hotels cluster around the compact city center, ensuring quick and easy access to major tourist sights and activities. The only drawback to staying in this area is the lack of free parking, so if you're exploring by car, considering booking into a bed and breakfast in one of the city's residential blocks. Visitors planning on longer stays can also consider several apartment hotels, offering spacious furnished units with complimentary Wi-Fi, free bike rentals, and access to rooftop terraces.

  • The second you walk into this little shop, you are overwhelmed with the smell of fresh chocolate. If I could bottle it, I'd be rich! So many choices and all of them look great!  more »
  • We purchased buttercream eggs for Easter and they were very runny, not like others we have purchased from other Philadelphia chocolatiers. We were disappointed especially considering the price.  more »
  • I read all the different pages for their website, which are extensive and detailed (in a good way), but nothing prepared me for stepping into Shane's on a blustery May afternoon. You want to freeze th...  more »

  • I've never been to the store, but I received their turtles as a x-mas gift. They were hands down the best I ever had. First of all they are gigantic. I only ate one at a time. The caramel was gooey and delicious. The chocolate melted in my mouth.
  • This is a really nice place. Have a hot chocolate there and get some fudge.
  • An amazing little shop with a great staff. The hot chocolate in the back is awesome as well!
  • Wonderful old candy shop. The shop in one form or another dates to the Civil War. Great selection of chocolates and confections. If you are anywhere near Shane's you simply must stop in. Heads above the cold high end candy stores.
  • Great stop for dessert and don't forget Jefferson's nightcap. Chocolate in a cup so delicious.
