Shane Confectionery, Philadelphia

(4.3/5 based on 80 reviews on the web)
Shane Confectionery is the oldest continuously-run confectionery in the United States, established in 1863. The Shane family took over the business in 1911, installing elaborately carved woodwork, stained glass and curved windows to showcase the chocolates and confections made onsite. Ninety-nine years later, in 2010, the business transitioned to the Berley Brothers who own the nearby Franklin Fountain and whom embarked on a meticulous restoration of the building and business. Candies continue to be made on-site, with an emphasis on locally-sourced ingredients, seasonal specialties and old-fashioned quality.

  • This is a very cute shop. It was cold and we found it by mistake. We had a hot chocolate prepared in the old fashion way, and it was delicious.
  • Found this hidden gem walking around aimlessly and so glad we did. The staff wears the old fashion uniforms and the shop looks like it's orginal from when the store opened in 1911. Even went back the ...  more »

  • Went for a tour with my neice when she was visiting, it was a great activity for us to do together. Really interesting to hear about all the original fixtures of the building and history of the business. Also the caramels are really really good. Lavender caramel was memorable!
  • Amazing assortment of gourmet chocolates and candies. Tough to leave the store without spending a lot of cash on goodies. Bought a coffin shaped box of chocolates here, because hearts are for losers. Also, it's almost Halloween.
  • Legit old school candy shop with lots of homemade creations that often outdo the leading brands. A ways down market but worth it for a treat.
  • Come to see the very old old-fashioned candy store and marvel at the display. But don't leave with some of the hard candy they make themselves. Well worth a visit, maybe while you are waiting for friends at the popular ice cream place next door.
  • A classic and ageless candy shop! The candy and chocolates are sold at a premium, but this spot features tons of options and a great confectionary experience.
