Love Park, Philadelphia

3.2
#4 of 21 in Parks in Philadelphia
Experience the City of Brotherly Love's central plaza, Love Park, nicknamed for its famous sculpture. This park, which is officially known as John F. Kennedy Plaza, is most recognized as the site of Robert Indiana's iconic Love statue. The park was built in 1965, but Indiana's sculpture was added in 1976 in celebration of the United States' bicentennial. It became a permanent fixture of the park in 1978 and has since become a symbol of the city. The park sits near City Hall and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among other tourist attractions. Take time to walk through the city center, take a photo with the Love sculpture, and pass by the Love Fountain, which is dyed various colors throughout the year to commemorate different events. • Love the newly renovated Love Park. No more awkward steps in the perimeter of the park to get to the other side. And, a maze like landscape is finally gone and replaced with refreshingly open and plan. Although I'm sad to see the grand water fountain which used to be the center piece of the park go, but it looks like smaller water fountains like the one at Dilworth Plaza, and The Sister City Park will be installed at the center of gently sloping park. The Flying Saucer structure, formerly The Philadelphia Visitors Center in the park is under going a major renovation. I'm excited to see when the structure is finished and maybe occupied by a restaurant. Finally, The Love Sculpture by Robert Indiana is back home at its original location. Visitors, take as many pictures as your heart desires.
  • So, when you're in Philly, there are a few "touristy" stuff you have to do, and don't try to tell me that you don't want to join in on the line of folks waiting for the perfect spot to get their Love sign photo, because you do, and you will. Love Park, and the Love sign is synonymous with Philly, and is at center city near City Hall. It is such a gorgeous area and in the summer, it's also nice to sit on the side and dip your feet into the fountain. When the wind blows, the spray from the fountain blows on you and it feels amazing. There are tons of what seem to be really nice people offering to take your photo for you, but just stand back and watch what happens after they seem to be so nice in doing so...they then demand money from the folks who just got their pic taken. Don't ask, or agree for strangers to take your pic. They want money. Take your own, it's cuter that way anyway! It can be a sketchy place at night, so be sure to stick with the daytime visiting.
  • So small. I thought this was an actual Park. Disappointed. The only thing to do is take one pic under the love sign. Parking sucks. Don't believe the hype.
  • Love park is one of my favorite places in Philly. I used to eat lunch there and really missed it when it was under construction. I'm not thrilled with the new layout but really happy to have it back nonetheless. I'm sure it'll grow on me
  • Great park in every way except for when the local Philadelphia police chase away everyone that is skating, and then in doing so scare away every one else in the process. The police seem to be the local park bullies compared to being the babysitters. I dislike how they work and plan to take action in 2018.
