  • I researched online and read the history of the prison before we visited, I highly recommend doing this for a better perspective. Follow the self guided tour, but don't miss the video in the out...

  • Great historical experience. They have a Resturaunt on the hounds that was pretty good. They have a distillery and you can sample. Great place for a day trip if your close.

  • I've always seen this complex from the road and wanted to check it out, and I finally got the opportunity... Well worth the $12 admission! Although the tour is self-guided, the pathways are very clearly marked and there are lots of informative placards along the way giving interesting facts about what life was like for the people sentenced to life behind those walls. It was a very eye-opening historical lesson! Exploring the site on your own gives you the opportunity to really soak up the history at your own pace, and there are a few former corrections officers scattered around who are more than happy to answer questions or share their own personal stories of events that took place when the facility was still active. (I was amazed to learn that it remained an active prison until 2009!) On the way out, my husband and I stopped at The Warden's Table, an on-sight restaurant with pleasantly reasonable prices. We shared a baked potato loaded with pulled pork, cheese, sour cream and butter that was terrific! These people really know their BBQ! I can't wait to go back and try their ribs! We really enjoyed our visit and came away with a new perspective on what life must have been like for those who chose the darkest of paths that eventually brought them to such an end. Truly, it was a little piece if Hell on Earth in its time.
  • This is a piece of Americana that now being transformed into a tourist attraction. A tremendous amount of history is in the building and grounds. The operation that is making this transformation in my opinion could do a better job of identifying and directing the visitors through the facility. It was an educational trip and I'm glad we made the journey. I'm hoping that as they progress in the future, they make it more visitor friendly. The Warden's Table food was great and very reasonably priced.
  • This place was pretty cool, would be neat to visit in the dark evening hours. Got some really great photos, the food was amazing... Little steep, but definitely great food. Didn't buy anything other than tickets & food, but the gift store looked pretty neat too.
  • Highly recommend! Great day trip, $12 entry fee is best deal around. Will only take a couple of hours to see it all unless you stop to hear the stories, which you should definitely do! Food at Warden's Table is decent. Didn't try the moonshine.
  • Went during the day, will need to plan a night trip so I can get properly spooped. There are lots of signs around with detailed info about the prison, along with a museum with items from its history. And today there were two former inmates and a former guard answering questions. I enjoyed it! And the food at the Wardens Table was very good! Portion sizes are gargantuan!
