Painted Desert, Petrified Forest National Park

Create an itinerary including Painted Desert
Like a striking canvas, the Painted Desert builds layer upon layer of color on hills made of siltstone, mudstone, and shale. The resulting view highlights the region's name, alternating oranges, white, reds, and pinks. This badlands area was formed of volcanic rock and limestone revealed by erosion over the years. Drive through the region along a paved road that stretches over plateaus on Navajo land with many lookout points. • There were too many sites to even list individually. There are walking trails and driving trails. About an hour and a half trip if you drive it, but still stop to take pictures.

  • This is the most beautiful place that is also including the petrified forest.
  • Beautiful scenery nice drive however highway signs should have an east and west entrance sign. We followed the sign going east that said we had 21 miles to the painted desert and when we came out it actually took us back 30 minutes east where we should have entered to begin with. Lots of stops didn't get to make them all.
  • Painted Desert is best accessed through Petrified Forest NP. It is a large area of interesting rock formations that take multiple colours from the many layers of rock deposits. It can be seen across Arizona, but Petrified Forest is the best way to get close access.
  • What a awesome place, The pictures don’t do justice!
  • Beautiful views, I wish we would have know how many total miles there was to explore so we could have paced ourselves better. We spent way too much time at the beginning and it was beautiful. I would have liked to have had time to see it all!
