Blandford Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in Petersburg, Virginia, United States. The oldest stone, marking the grave of Richard Yarbrough, reads 1702. Veterans of every American war are buried there, including 30,000 Confederates killed in the Siege of Petersburg (1864–65) during the American Civil War. It is located adjacent to the People's Memorial Cemetery, a historic African-American cemetery. In 1866, Blandford Cemetery was the site of Decoration Day ceremony. While visiting the cemetery, the wife of Union General John A. Logan was present and spied Miss Nora Fontaine Davidson, a schoolteacher, and her pupils putting flowers and tiny Confederate flags on the soldiers' graves. Shortly afterward General Logan issued a proclamation calling for the observance of Memorial Day. Locals say that Decoration Day served as the inspiration for the federal Memorial Day.The cemetery grounds cover 189acre, making it the second largest cemetery in Virginia behind Arlington National Cemetery. The original burial grounds, referred to as the "old ground," span 4acre and includes the historic Blandford Church.Colonel Robert Bolling, Confederate Major General William Mahone, his wife Otelia, and many of their kinfolk, and Confederate Brigadier General David A. • We went to blandford cemetery today to visit my father in law who has been there for 5 years and to this day there is still no grass at his plot we have called and complained about this several times and even put down our own grass seed. The grass has not been cut in awhile and there were ticks all over us when we left. when we got to the grave site his wreath was knocked over and the grass had grown over his stone. don't you pay for perpetual care when you buy the plot this is ridiculous wouldn't you want it to look nice for visitors on Fathers Day. How many times do we have to complain about this. Also there were several grave sites that were torn up and a above ground grave site with 3 graves where the cement boxes were torn up and fallen in. So my question here is where does our money go when we pay for our loved ones? What are the workers doing while they should be taking care of our loved ones?
  • One of my favorite places ever! My Great-grandmother; Grandmother; and Mother + 2 aunts & 1 uncle are resting in our family plot in the old historic section. I am very proud & have spent many a peaceful time there with my Grandmother & Mother, back in the day, remembering fondly. Even grabbing a to-go lunch at Kings BBQ & sitting beside my family peacefully reflecting on the good times. Rest in peace. I miss you!!!!
  • Best collection of Tiffany stained glass windows in the South. Michael was very informative and helpful with answering questions. Part of history and art that needs to be seen..
  • Love the history, resting place of many family members & friends.
  • A beautiful and serene locale, with excellent vistas of greenery. The cemetery is vast, and the funereal sculptures - especially in the older part areas, are very pleasing. True, cemeteries are always sad, but Blandford has a gentle beauty to it that one will always remember.
